Trotter cites legal trouble in ending US House run

CHICAGO (AP) ? An Illinois state lawmaker who was a frontrunner to replace former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. says he's ending his candidacy because he doesn't want the felony gun charges he faces to detract from the district's important issues.

Donne Trotter was arrested Dec. 5 when security screeners at O'Hare International Airport found an unloaded .25-caliber Beretta handgun in his bag.

He told officers he has the gun for a job he works with a security firm and forgot it was in his bag before he went to the airport.

Trotter announced Saturday he will not seek the 2nd congressional district seat, explaining that solving the area's economic and other problems was too important to allow his legal "situation to detract from what needs to be front and center."

New Year Tips to Maintain Financial Control

Posted by Omari | December 28th, 2012 | Awards & Perks, General Information

With 2013 around the bend ? credit card bills and special offers are about to arrive, making it the perfect time to begin thinking about resolutions for the New Year. For many, that involves better money management, gaining credit card rewards and spending credit if need be, smartly.

Financial and credit managers would say one of the best ways to take control of your financial portfolio and money management is to reduce debt. Assessing your level of debt and why you?ve incurred that debt are the first steps.
Then take measured action to reduce debt and work towards improving your overall financial picture for your 2013.

Tips to help take control of your finances in 2013

? Start with your free credit report to better understand your credit standing. You?re entitled to a free credit report from each of the three national credit reporting agencies, including Equifax, each year.

? Establish a budget so you can track where your money goes each month. This will aid in cutting out unnecessary expenditure from your routine.

? Create a goal such as a family vacation or paying back a certain percentage of your debt to make it easier to stave off spending.

? Make a plan for paying back debt most effectively. Having a financial planner or using an online debt management tool can help you prioritize debts.

? When it?s time to make a major purchase, create a list of pros and cons to help you make a smart financial decision. Also maximize the purchase with a credit card that rewards you for big purchases during the inception period, like the Starwood Preferred Guest? Business Credit Card from American Express OPEN. Or cards that boast zero or low introductory APRs, like the Citi? Dividend Platinum Select? Visa? Card ? $100 Cash Back.

? Don?t let bills pile up; past due bills can incur late fees and will negatively affect your credit score. Several Chase cards come with the Blueprint program, which allows cardholders several payback options for budgeting.

? If possible, make more than the minimum payment each month on credit card balances, which may help raise your credit score. Because some credit card companies take several days to process and post your payment, paying 5-7 days before the due date is wise.

Big Changes Start With Small Steps

?It may seem daunting at first, but by taking even small steps in 2013, you can reduce debt and take more control of your own finances,? said Trey Loughran, president of the Personal Solutions unit at Equifax. ?This is a new year?s resolution worth keeping all year long.?

However, if you?re serious about decreasing debt in 2013, one of the first things to do is decease debt load and spend wisely. Dorothy Barrick, a GreenPath Debt Solutions counselor says, ?The money that you have been spending on interest is money that could be going towards building savings and financial security.?

Also look for ways to reduce your overall interest costs. This can include balance transfers, consolidation loans, and/or a Debt Management Plan through a non-profit credit counseling organization.

With 2012 coming to a close and 2013 on the horizon, make it a lucky year for you and your financial portfolio. To find a credit card to fit your financial profile, visit CardOffers.com.

Tale of 2 cities: Homicides drop in NYC, leap in Chicago

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Scott Olson / Getty Images

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, pictured at a flag-raising ceremony at the Chicago Police Academy in October, said this month that "we will not rest" until Chicago's growing homicide rate is reversed.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was crowing.

"The number of murders this year will be lower than any time in recorded city history," Bloomberg said Friday in a statement announcing that homicides in the city this year had fallen to 414 ? the fewest since it started keeping such statistics in 1963.

About the same time Friday, Chicago police were trying to get the message out that their city hadn't actually recorded its 500th homicide this year, as was being reported. A few hours later, they had to backtrack and acknowledge that, yes, in fact, "the city has seen its 500th homicide for 2012."

That's right: There were more homicides this year in Chicago than in New York, a city with three times the population. That means Chicagoans were proportionally 3.7 times more likely to be homicide victims than New Yorkers were in 2012:

Overall, crime is down in Chicago in just about every category ? except the most devastating one.

"We've obviously seen, as a city, our shootings and our homicides going in a different direction," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said this month at a graduation ceremony for police recruits, vowing, "We will not rest" until that trend is reversed.

Grim milestone: Chicago records 500th homicide of 2012

Meanwhile, in New York, "we're preventing crimes before someone is killed," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday.

New York didn't just reduce homicides ? it reduced them by 19.6 percent. And Chicago didn't just have more homicides ? it had 15.6 percent more.

Both figures are extraordinary. Last year, homicides fell by about 4 percent in New York, exactly in line with other U.S. cities with populations greater than 1 million, according to FBI figures. They fell in Chicago by just less than three-quarters of 1 percent.

While there's always the chance that the changes are just statistical flukes, two concrete factors appear to be at least partly responsible: money and priorities.

New York's police budget held steady in fiscal 2012, at about $4.6 billion.

Emanuel, facing a $300 million budget deficit, by contrast cut $67 million from the $1.3 billion police budget ? a 5 percent reduction that was down from his original proposal to cut police funding by 15 percent.

While Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry?McCarthy said the cuts would help the police department become more efficient, Jens Ludwig, a criminal justice expert at the University of Chicago, said you'd have to be a fool "to think that you could have budget cuts like these and have no impact on crime and other aspects of public life."

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

"I have been really surprised at how little attention the local and state budget situation has received in discussions about the Chicago violence problem," Ludwig told NBC News on Friday.

The other factor is commitment, Ludwig said.?

"New York City seems to be exceptionally focused on getting illegal guns off the street," he said.

Ludwig drew an analogy to prosecution of drunken driving.

At one time, the official attitude was that "if the driver is lucky enough not to hurt anyone, it's no big deal," he said. "But (eventually) we started to realize drunk driving imposes probabilistic harm, and so we started to punish the risky behavior rather than focus on the luck of the draw about whether anyone happened to get hurt.

"New York City has taken that idea seriously for illegal gun carrying, recognizing that illegal guns on the street greatly increase the risk that an argument turns into a murder," he said.

Kelly, the New York police commissioner, stressed that point Friday, saying his officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns."?

"We're preventing crimes before someone is killed and before someone else has to go to prison for murder or other serious crimes," he said.

New York City homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Bloomberg made a similar point, singling out what he called the city's renewed commitment to Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas. The city's participation "reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," he said.

Left unmentioned was the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she exits a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

"I think there is some empirical basis to think that all those hundreds and thousands of stops and searches for illegal guns helps keep guns off the street and contributes to a lower homicide rate," Ludwig said.

But the policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search people without cause ? the great majority of them members of minority groups.

According to an analysis of raw arrest statistics by the nonprofit Center for Constitutional Rights, which opposes the policy, 84 percent of the 686,000 people stopped and searched in 2011 were African-American or Latino. Only 6 percent of the stops resulted in an arrest. And in only 2 percent of stops were illegal weapons or other contraband actually found.

Read the full report (.pdf)

Statistics like that make it worth asking "whether stop and frisk is worth the cost," Ludwig said. "All the stops come disproportionately to young, minority males."?

A trial date is set for March. In the meantime, Bloomberg said Friday, New York remains "the safest big city in America."

Oil prices rise ahead of US fiscal-cliff talks

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of crude rose Friday, following stock markets in Asia higher hours ahead of a last-ditch effort in Washington for political leaders to strike a budget deal before the year-end deadline.

Benchmark crude for February delivery rose 13 cents at late afternoon Bangkok time to $91 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract fell Thursday following a reported drop in U.S. consumer confidence and growing pessimism that President Barack Obama and Republican lawmakers will reach a compromise on ways to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff ? hundreds of billions of dollars in government spending cuts and tax increases that take effect automatically in 2013 unless lawmakers act.

Hopes that a compromise might be reached were raised after Obama, who cut his Hawaii vacation short, invited congressional leaders to the White House for talks Friday.

In other energy futures trading:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.5 cents to $2.8166 a gallon.

? Brent crude, used to price various kinds of foreign oil, fell 12 cents to $110.68 per barrel in London.

? Heating oil fell 0.7 cent to $3.0417 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 3.6 cents to $3.376 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Iraq Sunni rallies gather steam

RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters from Iraq's Sunni Muslim minority kept up a week-old blockade on a key highway on Thursday and readied mass rallies for Friday to demand concessions from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.

Protests flared last week after troops loyal to Maliki, who is from the Shi'ite majority, detained bodyguards of his finance minister, a Sunni. Many Sunnis, whose community dominated Iraq until the fall of Saddam Hussein, accuse Maliki of refusing to share power and of favoring Shi'ite, non-Arab neighbor Iran.

A year after U.S. troops left, sectarian friction, as well as tension over land and oil between Arabs and ethnic Kurds, threaten renewed unrest and are hampering efforts to repair the damage of years of violence and exploit Iraq's energy riches.

"The people want to bring down the regime," chanted some of about 2,000 demonstrators in the Sunni city of Ramadi - an echo of those used abroad during last year's "Arab Spring" and still a rallying cry for mainly Sunni rebels in neighboring Syria.

Some flew the old Iraqi flag, introduced by Saddam's Baath party and bearing three stars. It was replaced in 2008. Earlier in the week, Syria's rebel flag was also flown at the protests.

The main highway at Ramadi, 100 km (60 miles) west of Baghdad, was barricaded for a fifth day, disrupting transit of government supplies along a key trade route to and from Jordan and Syria. Protesters were, however, letting most trucks, carrying private goods, pass along another road through Ramadi.

There was also a small protest in the northern city of Mosul. Activists, who want changes to laws on terrorism that they say penalize Sunnis, plan bigger rallies on Friday, the traditional day of rest - and protest - in the Muslim world.

"If the government does not deal seriously with the people's demands, we will take our battle to the gates of Baghdad," said Sheikh Ali Hatem Sulaiman, head of the Dulaimi tribe, which dominates Ramadi and the sprawling desert province of Anbar.

Recalling the role the Anbar tribes played in first fighting the U.S. occupation and then allying with U.S. forces and the Baghdad government to contain al Qaeda fighters in the region, the sheikh warned Maliki's administration that Sunnis might resort to violence - though it is unclear how ready they are:

"Just as we fought al-Qaeda and the Americans, we will fight the government inside Baghdad," he said.

Should Friday's protests provide a mass show of force, it may add to concerns that the increasingly sectarian Syrian civil war, where majority Sunnis are battling a ruler backed by Iran, will push Iraq back to the Sunni-Shi'ite slaughter of 2005-07.

Al Qaeda fighters appear to be regrouping in Anbar and to be joining rebel ranks across the border in Syria.

While demands so far focus on the anti-terrorism laws which Sunnis say are being used against them, one lecturer in law at Baghdad University said Sunnis might be emboldened to call for regional autonomy in Anbar and other provinces in the northwest where they are in a majority - a status similar to that of the Kurds, who won Western-backed autonomy from Saddam in 1991.

"I'm seeing greater determination to defy Maliki and if their demands are not met, the call to have their own region will be an inevitable consequence," said Ahmed Younis. "The Kurdish region could become a model for Sunnis in Anbar."

SECTARIAN SLANT

Sunni complaints against Maliki grew louder a week ago when, just hours after Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd seen as a steadying influence, was flown abroad for medical care, troops arrested bodyguards for Finance Minister Rafaie al-Esawi.

For many it recalled how Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a Sunni, was forced to flee into exile a year ago, just when U.S. troops had withdrawn. Hashemi, sentenced to death in absentia, told al-Hayat newspaper on Thursday that it was "fresh evidence of a plot to exclude Sunni Arabs from the political process".

Maliki has sought to divide his rivals and strengthen alliances in Iraq's complex political landscape before provincial elections next year and a parliamentary vote in 2014.

A face-off between the Iraqi army and Kurdish forces over disputed oilfields in the north has been seen as a possible way of rallying Sunni Arab support behind the prime minister.

Shi'ite rivals to Maliki, notably cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, have also looked to broader alliance, notably by voicing support for the protesters' grievances in Anbar this week.

But anti-Shi'ite rhetoric among them limits the chances for cooperation: "They lost a lot of sympathy by using these sectarian slogans," lawmaker Hakim al-Zamili, a Sadr ally, told Reuters. "I don't expect many Maliki opponents to join them".

An analyst at the Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies also doubted the protests would broaden greatly to threaten Maliki: "We are talking about demands that have a certain geography," said Yahya Qubaisi. "They are not national demands."

Toyota acceleration settlement gets preliminary OK

(AP) ? A U.S. judge gave preliminary approval Friday to a $1 billion-plus settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. in cases involving problems of sudden, unintended acceleration by its vehicles, a plaintiffs' attorney said.

Attorney Steve Berman said in a statement he was pleased District Judge James V. Selna gave swift initial approval.

Toyota has said the deal, announced Wednesday, will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from motorists who said the value of their Toyota vehicles plummeted after recalls stemming from claims that the Japanese automaker's cars and trucks accelerated unintentionally.

The preliminary approval means current and former Toyota owners included in the settlement will receive information through notices expected to be mailed in early March. Information about the settlement will also be published in newspapers around the country.

Selna plans to hold a fairness hearing June 13 to consider granting final approval.

Numerous cases filed since 2009 were consolidated in Selna's court and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid.

Toyota, which has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems, plans to take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman has said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Toyota plans to offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010. The company also will provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components and retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

Bake Better Chocolate Chip Cookies by Using Chocolate Bars Instead of Chips

Bake Better Chocolate Chip Cookies by Using Chocolate Bars Instead of ChipsThe (very worthwhile) hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie has yielded thousands of cookie recipes. The next time you bake a batch, try out this simple tip: instead of chocolate chips or chunks, chop up a baking bar for more flavorful and better-looking cookies.

Leslie Beslie offers this tip on her blog, saying that the chopped chocolate will be more evenly distributed in the cookie, and adding all the little slivers makes the cookies look amazing. (That's her cookies photo up above.) She suggests using a good quality semi-sweet chocolate bar.

Serious Eats did a taste test pitting chips, chunks, and chopped bits against each other and scientifically concluded the same thing.

Chopping up bars is an extra step, but one that you'll appreciate when it comes time to dig into those cookies.

Check out Leslie's post for more cookie perfection tips.

'Save Samer, he is dying': Samer Issawi and the plight of Palestinian ...

both holding picture
Samer's father Tariq, and sister Shireen, holding a photo of Samer in the family's?East Jerusalem home (Photo: Ryan Rodrick Beiler/ Alternative Information Center)

Today, Wednesday the 26th, I woke up thinking of the last episode in Samer's story; of his heart; of his mother; and of an innocent family. He has been charged with spurious charges and denied a fair trial in the Israeli military courts. Now, he has been on hunger strike for 152 days, deprived of his freedom and proper medical care.

I have lived in Gaza "the biggest prison" since my childhood. Yet I cannot envisage the situation of Samer's small cell. Indeed, there is no comparison. Being on a hunger strike for more than 151 days, and living in a dirty dark cell for around 11 years is not at all easy, particularly without a fair trial and proper charges, and not knowing the day of your release. You are in a constant state of suspense.

Samer has been detained more than once. His current arrest took place only eight months after his last release. On Sun Dec16th, I contacted Samer's sister to delve more into the latest news regarding his brother?s case. I knew it would be difficult to get in touch with her during this difficult time, but I convinced myself to be as strong as I can since this might help spreading the plight of Samer. When she answered, the first sentence she uttered was; "Save Samer, he is dying". She carried on and I could sense how gloomy her voice was:

?We got a piece of news on Dec 14th when the Occupation Court refused to release Samer Issawi on bail. I have received news from different sources indicating that my brother has recently started suffering from severe pain in all of his body especially in his muscles, the abdomen, and kidneys. He has an acute vitamin B12 deficiency. His body has begun to eat his muscles and nerves. It seems he has lost the control of his limbs as a result of malfunction of the nerves. His vision is frail as a result of fainting four to five times a day and his body is covered with bruises. He is vomiting blood, his heart is weakening, and he can barely breathe.?

A Mother's Plea

On Nov 22nd I talked with Samer's father on the phone. Hearing his sad voice gave away how depressed he was. On Sunday, December 16th, though the situation is even harder as his son is at a critical condition, I had the chance to talk to him again, and I asked about his wife who had fainted after her son's re-arrest; she has hardly been able to speak or move since then. "Her condition is worsening each day. She was shocked and kept looking at her son's face when she attended the court hearing on Thursday, December 13th. She could not endure seeing her son losing more than half of his weight. Unconsciously, she screamed at the judge's face, "Your apartheid regime is illegal and we do not recognize it. Samer will be released either you want or not". I do not know how to describe this, but my wife is just a mother with a heart!" "Her physical and psychological condition is now more at risk than ever. She cannot endure seeing her own son dying. She spends most of her day at hospitals and every single moment, she repeats the same plea: "Can't anybody help my son to be free and to live!"

I cautiously asked Shireen: ?When have you seen your brother?" ?No one has met or spoken to him since his current arrest. I have seen him on Thursday (December 13th) when he appeared in court. He is turning into some bones covered with a human wrap. In other words, he is a skeleton sitting in a wheelchair, and he can't move or walk. My brother was put in the slaughterhouse of Ramla Prison Hospital during his first month of the strike. A month later he was put in a small cell as a punishment. He suffered the solitary confinement in a two-meter square room, meant to pressure him to end his strike,? she answered with sorrow.

"Where is he now?" I asked with growing anxiety. "He is still in a small dark room in Assaf Harofeh hospital. He is kept in isolation; no one can see him, not even his loved ones. The only human contact he has is the guards, who misleadingly wear white uniforms. His legs are tied with shackles that look even bigger now against his tiny skeleton."

Solitary Confinement

It is very difficult to describe this kind of torture. In a recent article, I said,

"Only imagine that you are in a silent void filled with your own fears and pain, in a deafening silence. You wait for somebody to arrive, but nobody, not even your loved ones are allowed to visit you. The only human contact is with the guards who are the lords and masters over every minute of your day. It is a sort of a living grave where fears unfold. You have nightmares about not having a place to be in. And no reason is given for your detention, and no process is outlined for your release. And consider going without food, and not just for the evening, but for days and days. And what you can imagine does not get near to the reality of what the prisoners are feeling. But the link between the prisoners and you will give them power and strength over their misery, to overcome some of what they are facing now."

Samer Today

I phoned Samer's mom today December 26th, to know the latest in regard to her son:

"The day 152 is a time of a severe head ache and pain in the spine, as well as a severe chest pain due to having been assaulted by Israeli police in Dec 13th. My son also mentioned that the prison administration did not conduct the necessary tests to him after that attack e against him. As the lawyer of The Prisoner Forum said that my son launched his strike for three main goals; bring the prisoner's voice to the free world that we have the right to live, tell the occupation that if he thinks of arresting more free prisoners, he will got more and more problems, and the last objective is to be free which is the remaining demand." She stopped for a while and I could hear her wail, ?He has been taken away from his home, tortured with no charge except his commitment to Palestine. Isn't there any free body to let me see my darling before his death? Please help him to be free and alive. My eyes want to see him. My heart wants to touch him. My mind want him by me!?

An Assassination Attempt or Criminal Neglect?

?It is worth mentioning that there is no medical treatment for my brother's condition as his health gradually deteriorates and his condition becomes unbearable. My brother stopped drinking water 10 days ago. On Sunday, December 9th, at 3:00 pm, Samer was given medicine. Seconds after taking it, he lost his consciousness for two full days. The administration department in the 'hospital' stated: ?This was given to Issawi by mistake.? There is no doubt that they want to kill him,? said the evidently distressed Shireen.

In a letter from Samer - translated by Ahrar Center and published on Wednesday Dec 12th, Samer writes about his health and about the aforementioned incident:

"I take B12 injections because I have gradual damage in my nervous system and I have pains in my eyes, nerves, abdomen, hands, arthritis, and muscles and can?t stand. They told me that they will give me an injection weekly in order to help my nervous system. My pain in my kidney and hands is increasing. The pain in my head is like the electrical shock and I have continuous diarrhea due to the fluids they give me in hospital. I have blood in urine twice a week. They put me in an isolated room in the hospital with plastic doors so that they can?t hear me when I call them. I accepted to take fluids and vitamins because the intelligence promised me that my file 80% finished.

They gave me on Wednesday a medicine. I slept for two days, then they said it wasn?t for me! It was for a civilian prisoner! And they didn?t even talk to the one. Before two days I found myself on the ground! I think I slept deeply, but they came searching for a cell phone thinking that I have one, but I told them that I asked the police man once to call the lawyer, and because I found a phone card they think that I have a phone! But the card, I didn?t take it, I threw it to the bed of the sick civilian man.

After a week of taking fluids and vitamins I stopped everything, because they were liars. My isolation is very hard."

Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association writes more about the medical neglect he and other prisoners are subject to: "Like the other prisoners, Samer is not being treated as an ill patient by the Ramla prison clinic. On Saturday December 1st, 2012 during an examination with the prison clinic doctor, Samer tried to stand and lost consciousness. Instead of assisting him, the doctor left him lying on the floor and exited the room. We express our deep concern for the health of Samer and the other detainees who are on hunger strike protesting their unlawful custody.?

Samer's Arrest

In a recent interview with Samer's sister, November 22nd, she explained why exactly her brother is detained, ?The Egyptian ambassador in Tel Aviv paid a visit to the prisoners who were supposed to be released in accordance with the prisoner swap deal. He told them that there would be no restrictions on their movement. However, on July 7th, my brother was captured from a place named Kufr Aqab between the Palestinian village of Hizma and the Zionist settlement, Adam, a region within the boundaries of the municipality of Jerusalem.? Shireen also recounted that this area belongs to the Israeli authority but since Israeli courts had no charge to justify my brother?s detention, they claim that ?Samer breached the deal as he was captured from a place that is not a part of Jerusalem, but the West Bank.?

Samer's father speculated, ?We do not know what Jerusalem is for us. Whenever the Israeli regime wants to change its boundaries, it does it by deceit and under the false cover of security.?

When asking Shireen about the Egyptian Representative?s response in regard to her brother?s issue, she answered sadly, ?They always tell us that they have spoken many times with the Israeli government but that is all, we get nothing that makes us believe that attempts to free my brother are bearing fruit.

Doubts

?It is still disputed whether the location of the arrest was considered Jerusalem or the West Bank? Labib Habib, Samer's lawyer from Nazareth, stated.

Habib added, ?The Israeli Military Committee will put anyone on trial in Ofer Military Court for three main reasons: if they claim that they have covert proof of a security threat; if the person has committed an offense the sentence for which is more than three months; or in response to a claim the person has violated conditions signed upon release.? The Military Committee has requested the Israeli Military Court to have Samer continue his remaining term of 20 years in jail from the original 30 years of his previous sentence, as he broke the conditions of the deal by entering the West Bank. Apart from this, the Israeli Magistrates Courts in Jerusalem are trying to charge him with disobeying the Israeli Military Commander in the West Bank. If convicted, he will be sentenced to more time in prison, in addition to the ruling of the Military Committee in Ofer Military Court.

His Charge!

"Due to the fact that Israeli Court does not have any charge against Samer, The Prisoner Forum's lawyer, Mofeed El-Hajj, revealed that the court also decided to drop the new charge leveled against Samer El-Issawi for allegedly assaulting police officers who were transporting him to court."

A Note

Samer is not the only prisoner on hunger strike. Three prisoners, Jafar Azzidine, Tarek Qa?adan, and Yousef Yassin have been striking for 30 days now, in protest of their administrative detention orders.

I have met with Jafar Azzidine's brother who lives in Gaza after his release in the last Deal, October 18th. He has been banned from entering Jenin, his original city:

"My brother had been on hunger strike for 54 days in July 2012 and has imposed his condition on the Israeli Prison Forces (IPS) by getting his freedom on Nov 22nd. Now, as his body does not endure another hunger strike; as he is again administrative detainee with neither charge nor trial, we call the world to end administrative detention, the sword pointed on the neck of the Palestinian detainees.

"Based on a letter I have received from my brother Dec 19th, Jafar along with Tarek Qa?adan, and Yousef Yassin were formerly striking to end administrative detention. They mentioned that their open hunger strikes are to protest the Intelligence and their policies and not just to gain individual freedom. They are under the pressure of the Israeli Prison Services to end their strikes but they will never give up and will never be undermined until achieving justice and freedom for all the imprisoned and hunger striking brothers, and the oppressed and those who were tortured by the fiery tormentors for decades. He ends his letter by a call on the free people to stand by them and to show responsibility for fellow prisoners, especially Samer Issawi who is nearing death. They also call on all local and international institutions and those that are specifically for human rights to intensify their efforts and to raise their voices high in international forums to expose the barbaric occupation and its practices."

"Jafar, 41 years old from Jenin, has been detained by the Occupation seven times, his most recent arrest being 21 March 2012. He participated in a hunger strike on May, 14th, and was released on June 19th, after spending 4 months in administrative detention. As a result of his most recent hunger strike, he suffers from low blood pressure, continuous dizziness and headaches, protein deficiencies and pain in his joints, knees, hands and spinal cord."

I met with Yasir Muzhir, the Head of Muhjat Al Quds Institution for the Prisoner Affairs in Gaza who is in a direct contact with the prisoners' families in the West Bank to give more details on Taek and Yousef.

"Tarik Qa'adan is of 40 years from Jenin. He has detained by the Israeli Military 13 times since 1989 and has been on hunger strike more than once in solidarity with former hunger strikers including Khader Adnan and Hana Shalabi. Yousef Yassin is of 29 years from Jenin. He is a free detainee and detained 13 times too. They are all administrative detainees. He also said that another prisoner named Odai Kilani is on hunger strike for 74 days now also against administrative detention!"

I met with Abd Alnaser Firwana a former detainee, a researcher, and the Head of the Statistic Branch in the Ministry of Detainees to ask about the legal condition of what-s-called administrative detention.

"It is a procedure allowing the Israeli Military to hold prisoners indefinitely on secret information without charging them or allowing them to stand trial. There are currently 178 administrative detainees. Before the beginning of Khader Adnan's strike, there were around 320 administrative detainees and now, there are around 180 only. This shows that it is a greatly successful battle!"

All the speakers I have met condemn the continued practice of administrative detention against the Palestinians. They also call to end this arbitrary practice and to comply with human rights law.

Samer's Message; Merry Christmas!

On Dec 24th, Samer forwarded a short message via his lawyer, ?My detention is unjust and illegal, just like the occupation is. My demands are legitimate and just. Thus I will not withdraw from the battle for freedom, waiting for either victory and freedom - or martyrdom."

He also conveys his warm greetings to Christians around the world on the significant occasion of Christmas, especially the Christians in Palestine. He wishes them a joyful feast and hope that during the same occasion next year - Palestine, Jerusalem, Al Aqsa mosque and the church of Nativity are freed so that everyone can pray together in peace, without cruel walls or atrocious restrictions.

I contacted Samer's sister today December 26th; to send a message to the world:

"imagine yourself put in a small dark dirty cell alone for around five months. Samer is a human like you asking and calling on you all to stand by him. Think of him as if he was your brother or son. He needs every bit of your support. It is a message to those who have hearts, to those who belong to humanity, to the free world - save Issawi before it is too late!"

I was speechless; my voice grew harsher. Who can hear this story and remain silent?

Egypt's Mubarak moved to army hospital on health concerns

CAIRO (Reuters) - Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian strongman ousted last year after 30 years in power, was moved to an army hospital from a prison hospital on Thursday following a fall that raised fresh concerns about his fragile health.

Mubarak, 84, was forced out in a 2011 uprising and sentenced to life in prison in June of this year for his role in killing protesters during the revolt. He was admitted to a prison hospital that month following what security officials called a "health crisis".

Mubarak's health has been the subject of intense speculation in Egypt and he has spent much of the time before and after his trial in the prison hospital.

His lawyer said he was transferred to the military hospital after fracturing a rib in the fall in his prison clinic. He said he also suffered from lung complications and dizziness.

"The health condition is deteriorating to some extent due to the president's fall the week before last," lawyer Mohamed Abdel Razek told Reuters.

Mubarak is to be treated at the military hospital in Cairo's Maadi suburb. "He will stay for awhile," a security source told Reuters.

Mubarak's legal team had been pressing to have him moved from the prison hospital to a better-equipped facility, saying he was not receiving adequate treatment.

There has been no clarity, however, on the exact nature of any of his ailments, with state media reporting a variety of illnesses ranging from shortage of breath to heart attacks and comas.

On July 16 Mubarak was sent back to prison on the orders of the former public prosecutor who said his health had improved and he no longer needed the advanced care of the military hospital where he had been moved in June.

At the time, senior officers and military sources gave various accounts of Mubarak's condition, including that he was in a coma and on life support.

The fate of his family, accused by Egypt's new rulers of accumulating vast wealth illegally during Mubarak's long reign, is also the subject of much speculation.

Public prosecutor Talaat Abdallah has agreed to a request from Egypt's illicit gains authority investigating corruption to confiscate funds from two bank accounts belonging to Mubarak's wife Suzanne and move them to the central bank, the MENA news agency said.

The state newspaper al-Ahram said the amount to be confiscated was 27 million Egyptian pounds ($4.4 million). In May 2011 Suzanne Mubarak was released from detention on graft accusations and relinquished some of her assets to the state.

Mubarak's two sons are also being held in prison, facing trial on graft charges, which they deny.

Israel revisits ban on female prayer at holy site

(AP) ? Israel's prime minister has instructed a quasi-governmental Jewish organization to find a solution for non-Orthodox Jewish female groups wishing to pray at one of Judaism's holiest sites.

An official said Tuesday Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency, to look into the matter. The official spoke anonymously according to government regulations.

Last week Israeli police detained women from a liberal Jewish group who approached the Western Wall in Jerusalem carrying prayer shawls. Orthodox Jews insist those are for men only. The women seek to worship at the site without such restrictions.

Jewish Agency spokesman Benjamin Rutland said Netanyahu told Sharansky that the Western Wall "must remain a source of Jewish unity rather than division." The wall is a remnant of the biblical Jewish Temple compound.

Investing During Inflation

Ways of Investing During Inflation

There are some mutually exclusive strategies that can be used when investing during inflation. One strategy involves ratcheting up the level of risk one is willing to chance in order to achieve the returns necessary to beat out the inflation rate. The other is to park funds in a safe place where they are not likely to be destroyed by inflation, and then wait out the storm in the realization that you are not going to make much, if anything, until the financial skies clear once again.

This dichotomy is the real inflationary trap, since many investors depend on the returns that their portfolio yields and cannot spend years without any income. Ergo, they are forced either to take risks they do not feel comfortable with, or to live off their principal, and therefore harm the future income stream upon which all of their financial plans were long ago postulated upon.

Some Suggestions for Investing During Inflation

? Inflation destroys purchasing power, which means that each dollar buys less than it did previously. Because most people cannot significantly raise the number of dollars they make, they have to economize with the ones they do have. This makes value retailers such as WalMart or Dollar General likely candidates for improved earnings and thus higher stock prices. Value priced restaurants are also good plays. McDonalds always seems to do well.

? Liquor and gambling stocks were always expected to do well in tough times, but lately they have not proven to be the reliable contrarians they once were.

? Precious metal producers tend to rise in tandem with the inflation rate, but it is not easy to sift out the real players from the old guys with a hole in the ground and big but basically unrealistic plans.

? For those who are sick of trying to beat the game, US TIPS seem to be the vehicle of choice for investors. Buyers get a very small return on their investment, but are insulated from inflation by having the bond tied to the US Consumer Price Index.

Investing during inflation can be a frustrating exercise, but it is important to keep in mind that you want to position your investments not to ride out the inflationary hurricane but to be well placed to take off once blues skies return.

We understand that the holidays can be a tough time of year. And certainly gadget editors aren't immune from the sort of soul-searching melancholia that can come with season's greetings. But as we do with all of life's most difficult questions, we've opted to work things out in the form of an animated special. After the break, join Brian, Tim, their dog Gadget and a handful of Engadget editors as they attempt to find out what the holidays are really all about.

Google vs. Microsoft: Santa-trackers out of sync

9 hrs.

Not even Santa Claus can avoid getting drawn into the tech clash between Google and Microsoft: The two companies have set up separate online systems to track where the Jolly Old Elf has been on Christmas Eve?? but they show him simultaneously at widely separated locations, delivering presents at a dramatically different rate.

On the official "NORAD Tracks Santa" website, powered this year by Microsoft, Santa Claus was in Rome, well past the 3-billion-present mark in his holiday rounds. At the same time, Google's Santa Tracker showed him buzzing through Agadez in the African country of Niger, not quite up to the 1-billion-present mark.

They can't both be right. Can they? Here's the word from Search?Engine?Land's Danny Sullivan, who has been tracking the discrepancy in this year's?Santa-tracking software:

"NORAD explains that it uses everything from radar to jets to track Santa. Google doesn?t explain its technology, but I suspect it tries to triangulate Santa using his cell phone signal or use of wifi hotspots.

"As for why NORAD shows Father Christmas delivering three?times the number of gifts that Google is listing, perhaps NORAD?s radars can better pinpoint presents while Google might be doing estimating.?Meanwhile? both services sometimes show presents being delivered over oceans! And why is NORAD showing Santa arriving in some places at 9pm rather than midnight, as has been the case in the past?"

Maybe this is just the sort of thing that happens when you switch software: NORAD (also known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has been monitoring Santa's flight as a public service since 1955, and five years ago, it teamed up with Google to keep up with the crush of Web traffic. This year, however, the NORAD Santa operation parted ways with Google and partnered with Microsoft instead.

Google stayed in the Santa game by setting up its own tracking system for "Santa's Dashboard" and Google Maps?? a system that doesn't make use of NORAD's tracking data.

Today, Canadian Maj. Gen. Andre Viens, a spokesman for NORAD, declined to intervene in the Santa-tracking war.

"It's not affecting our tracking," Viens told MSNBC. "We're not in competition with anyone. Our role, and we've been doing that for more than?50 years, is to track Santa and make sure that he has a safe and secure journey throughout the world, and throughout North America in particular."

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising to find?that it's so difficult to get a firm fix on Santa's position, considering how many presents he has to deliver in so little time. Some experts have speculated that the only way Santa could ?deliver gifts (or lumps of coal) to billions of homes in the course of just a few hours would be if he somehow harnessed quantum teleportation. And once you accept that, it's not that big of a leap to detect Santa in two places at once.

Alan Boyle is the science editor for NBC News Digital, and has been tracking NORAD's Santa tracker since 1998.?Boyle's usual online?hangout is over at Cosmic Log.
