Study connects early childhood with pain, depression in adulthood

Feb. 27, 2013 ? It's common knowledge that a child who misses a meal can't concentrate in school. But what happens years down the road? Does that missed meal have any bearing on health in adulthood?

A new University of Nebraska-Lincoln study shows that missed meals in childhood can be linked to experiencing pain and depression in adulthood. Depression and chronic pain are experienced by 44 percent of working-aged adults and the study shows a correlation between childhood conditions and pain and depression in adulthood.

The study by UNL sociologist Bridget Goosby examines how childhood socioeconomic disadvantages and maternal depression increase the risk of major depression and chronic pain in working-aged adults.

Goosby examined a survey of 4,339 adults from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication looking for a relationship between circumstances in childhood and physical and mental health in working-age adults. She specifically looked at data from adults 25 to 64 years old.

Goosby said she was surprised to find that experiencing hunger in childhood can lead to chronic pain and depression in adulthood.

"The most robust child socioeconomic condition was experiencing hunger," Goosby said. "Kids who missed meals have a much higher risk of experiencing pain and depression in adulthood."

Goosby said pain and depression are biologically linked in medical literature and childhood conditions are strongly correlated with the risk of experiencing depression.

"Childhood conditions that are strongly correlated with the risk of experiencing depression in adulthood, may in fact, also be similar to the childhood conditions that are correlated with chronic pain in adulthood," Goosby said.

The study also found that maternal depression had a correlation with adults having depression later in life.

"Mother's depression mattered across the board," Goosby said. "You're at a higher risk for depression and physical pain if your mother had major depression."

Goosby said she was interested in whether childhood disadvantage amplified the risk of experiencing chronic pain or depression in adulthood.

In the study, Goosby noted that those who grew up with parents with less than 12 years of education had a much higher risk of experiencing chronic pain compared to adults with more highly educated parents, a disparity that becomes evident after age 42 and grew larger over time.

"Adults with parents who have 12 or fewer years of education show substantially larger risks of experiencing chronic pain in adulthood compared to adults with more highly educated parents," Goosby said.

With this information, Goosby said she hopes policymakers will pay attention to creating more healthy family dynamics in society and that the study's results will give policymakers a reason to examine circumstances in early childhood more closely.

"They can use this information to say we have growing evidence that childhood circumstances affect adult health outcomes," she said. "People's choices are constrained by their environments in which they live. We need to create healthy conditions for families."

Why SMS Text Marketing is still the Most Effective Form of Promotion

With the advent of smart phones many business owners small and large have sort of given up on the idea of sms text message marketing but, in fact, it remains one of the most powerful and economical tools that any business can use to generate revenues. The truth is, even with all of the advancements in mobile technology in the last 10 years, the simple sms text message remains the most effective. Want some numbers to back up that heady statement? Right now, worldwide, over 4 BILLION people send more than 5 TRILLION sms text messages.? Experts predict that this year that number will top 10 trillion!? That?s an incredibly huge audience and one that can be tapped into for revenue creation of all kinds. Texting as a whole continues to grow at incredibly strong levels and even has begun to take hold with the ?older? folks who might not have been every keen on texting when it first arrived but are now flocking to it in droves.? This gives the business owner an unsurpassed ability to reach out and connect with potential customers, locally or not.? It also is now a technology that almost everyone has embraced and knows how to use.? Indeed, despite all of the other options available text messaging is still the 2nd most preferred way to communicate using a cell phone and its gaining on regular voice calling every day. There are, to be sure, numerous other factors that make concentrating your marketing strategy around sms text marketing a sound business move.? There?s the already talked about high adoption rate of course but also a unique versatility to sms text as you can send ringtones, graphics, videos and coupons (to name a few). It also provides 2-way communication, the ability to interact with potential customers and let?s not forget mobile payments.? Finally the simple fact that sms text message marketing is still one of the most economical ways to market and advertise makes it well worth another look by any business owner. Finally, maybe the best reason to use sms text message marketing is this; there?s no need for both the sending and receiving parties to be available at the same time. No matter if your customer?s phone is turned off or they?re out of range they will inevitably get your message the next time their phone is on (and that message will be there until they delete it).? That?s a statement to the power of sms text message marketing and one of the myriad of excellent reasons that any business big or small should still consider using it to build, brand and monetize their business.

Cyprus draft bailout measures 'sufficient'

(AP) ? Cyprus' new finance minister says spending cuts and tax increases agreed with international creditors and included in a draft bailout agreement are sufficient to get the country's finances under control.

Michalis Sarris says Wednesday he would be "surprised" if more austerity was demanded.

Sarris says the faster a rescue package is finalized with the other 16 European Union countries that use the euro and the IMF the better. Outgoing Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly said Cyprus has enough money to pay bills until the end of May.

Cyprus needs as much as ?17 billion ($22.3 billion) to stave off bankruptcy after its banks lost billions on bad Greek debt. The sum is equal to the value of the country's economy, raising questions whether it will be able to repay any loan.

Wall St trips and falls on cloudy Italian election

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks on Monday suffered their biggest drop since November after a strong showing in Italian elections by groups opposed to the country's economic reforms triggered worry that Europe's debt problems could once again destabilize the global economy.

The decline marks the biggest percentage drop for the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index since November7, and drove the S&P down to its lowest close since January 18. The CBOE Volatility Index or VIX, Wall Street's favorite barometer of fear, surged 34 percent, its biggest jump since August 18, 2011.

Selling accelerated late in the trading session after the S&P 500 fell below the 1,500 level, which has acted as a significant support point. Monday marked the S&P's first close under 1,500 since February 4.

Italy's center-left coalition holds a slim lead over former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's center-right bloc in the election for the lower house of parliament, three TV projections indicated. But any government must also command a majority in the Senate, a race that is decided by region.

The resulting gridlock in parliament could lead to new elections and cast into doubt Italy's ability to pay down its debt.

"Europe hasn't gone away as an issue, it is going to hang around, and it is rearing its ugly head today," said Stephen Massocca, managing director of Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

"If someone gets elected who is simply not going to play by the rules, what are they going to do? It puts them in a real quandary here because their financial support, their monetary support is all stipulated by the fact that these austerity programs are going to be in place."

Earlier polls pointing to a center-left victory boosted stocks in Milan and other European markets, and also helped lift the S&P 500 to a session high of 1,525.84 on optimism that Italy would continue down its austerity path.

After a strong start to the year, equities have retreated more recently. The S&P 500's slight fall last week was its first weekly drop after a seven-week string of gains.

In Monday's volatile session, banks and other financial stocks were among the worst performers on worries about the sector's exposure to Italy's massive debt. The KBW Bank Index fell 2.7 percent.

The CBOE Volatility Index ended at 18.99, up 34.02 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 216.40 points, or 1.55 percent, to 13,784.17 at the close. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 27.75 points, or 1.83 percent, to 1,487.85. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 45.57 points, or 1.44 percent, to 3,116.25.

Although the overall market lost ground on Monday, there were a few bright spots.

Barnes & Noble Inc shares shot up 11.5 percent to $15.06 after the bookseller's chairman offered to buy its declining retail business.

Amgen Inc shares climbed 3.1 percent to $89.55, after rival Affymax issued a voluntary recall of its only drug, an anemia treatment that competes with Amgen's top-selling red blood cell booster, Epogen. Affymax shares lost 85.4 percent to $2.42.

The FTSEurofirst-300 index of top European shares edged up 0.04 percent and Italy's main FTSE MIB ended up 0.7 percent after earlier gaining nearly 4 percent.

Political uncertainty on the home front, though, is also on Wall Street's mind.

U.S. equities will face a test with the looming debate over so-called sequestration - U.S. government budget cuts that will take effect starting on Friday if lawmakers fail to reach an agreement over spending and taxes. The White House issued warnings about the harm the cuts are likely to inflict on the economy if enacted.

"Sitting out there is the one-thousand-pound gorilla - the sequester issue - and certainly nothing is happening there," said Tim Ghriskey, chief investment officer of Solaris Group in Bedford Hills, New York.

Lowe's Companies Inc lost 4.8 percent to $35.86 after the home improvement retailer posted fourth-quarter earnings.

With 83 percent of the S&P 500 companies having reported results so far, 69 percent beat profit expectations, compared with a 62 percent average since 1994 and 65 percent over the past four quarters, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies are estimated to have risen 6 percent, according to the data, above a 1.9 percent forecast at the start of the earnings season.

Volume was active with about 7.27 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE MKT and Nasdaq, above the daily average of 6.46 billion.

Declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq by a ratio of about 4 to 1.

Ex-surgeon general C. Everett Koop dies at 96

C. Everett Koop, who raised the profile of the surgeon general by riveting America's attention on the then-emerging disease known as AIDS and by railing against smoking, has died in New Hampshire at age 96.

An assistant at Koop's Dartmouth institute, Susan Wills, said he died Monday in Hanover, where he had a home. She didn't disclose his cause of death.

Koop wielded the previously low-profile post of surgeon general as a bully pulpit for seven years during the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

An evangelical Christian, he shocked his conservative supporters when he endorsed condoms and sex education to stop the spread of AIDS.

He carried out a crusade to end smoking in the United States ? his goal had been to do so by 2000. A former pipe smoker, he said cigarettes were as addictive as heroin and cocaine.

Koop's impact was great, although the surgeon general has no real authority to set government policy. He described himself as "the health conscience of the country."

"My only influence was through moral suasion," Koop said just before leaving office in 1989.

By then, his Amish-style silver beard and white, braided uniform were instantly recognizable.

Out of office, he switched to business suits and bow ties but continued to promote public health causes, from preventing childhood accidents to better training for doctors.

"I will use the written word, the spoken word and whatever I can in the electronic media to deliver health messages to this country as long as people will listen," he promised.

In 1996, he rapped Republican presidential hopeful Bob Dole for suggesting that tobacco is not invariably addictive, saying Dole's comments "either exposed his abysmal lack of knowledge of nicotine addiction or his blind support of the tobacco industry."

Although Koop eventually won wide respect with his blend of old-fashioned values, pragmatism and empathy, his nomination in 1981 met a wall of opposition from women's groups and liberal politicians.

Critics said Reagan selected Koop, a pediatric surgeon from Philadelphia, only because of his conservative views, especially his staunch opposition to abortion.

Foes noted that Koop traveled the country in 1979 and 1980 giving speeches that predicted a progression "from liberalized abortion to infanticide to passive euthanasia to active euthanasia, indeed to the very beginnings of the political climate that led to Auschwitz, Dachau and Belsen."

But Koop, a devout Presbyterian, was confirmed after he told a Senate panel he would not use the surgeon general's post to promote his religious ideology. He kept his word.

In 1986, he issued a frank report on AIDS, urging the use of condoms for "safe sex" and advocating sex education as early as third grade.

He also maneuvered around uncooperative Reagan administration officials in 1988 to send an educational AIDS pamphlet to more than 100 million U.S. households, the largest public health mailing ever done.

Koop personally opposed homosexuality and believed sex should be saved for marriage. But he insisted that Americans, especially young people, must not die because they were deprived of explicit information about how the HIV virus was transmitted.

He became a hero to AIDS activists, who chanted "Koop, Koop" at his appearances but booed other officials.

Koop further angered conservatives by refusing to issue a report requested by the Reagan White House, saying he could not find enough scientific evidence to determine whether abortion has harmful psychological effects on women.

Koop maintained his personal opposition to abortion, however. After he left office, he told medical students it violated their Hippocratic oath. In 2009, he wrote Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urging that health care legislation include a provision to ensure doctors and medical students would not be forced to perform abortions. The letter briefly set off a security scare because it was hand delivered.

Koop served as chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and as an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform plan.

At a congressional hearing in 2007, Koop spoke about political pressure on the surgeon general post. He said Reagan was pressed to fire him every day, but Reagan would not interfere.

Koop, worried that medicine had lost old-fashioned caring and personal relationships between doctors and patients, opened an institute at Dartmouth to teach medical students basic values and ethics.

He also was a part-owner of a short-lived venture, drkoop.com, to provide consumer health care information via the Internet. It made its initial public offering of stock in 1999, but expenses outstripped revenue and it was out of business by the end of 2001.

In July 2001, the company agreed to pay $4.25 million in cash to settle lawsuits filed by investors who claimed drkoop.com made false promises. Company officials did not admit wrongdoing.

Koop was born in New York's borough of Brooklyn, the only son of a Manhattan banker and the nephew of a doctor. He said by age 5 he knew he wanted to be a surgeon and at age 13 he practiced his skills on neighborhood cats.

He attended Dartmouth College, where he received the nickname Chick, short for "chicken Koop." It stuck for life.

He received his medical degree at Cornell Medical College, choosing pediatric surgery because so few surgeons practiced it.

In 1938, Koop married Elizabeth Flanagan, the daughter of a Connecticut doctor. They had four children ? Allen, Norman, David and Elizabeth. David, their youngest son, was killed in a mountain-climbing accident when he was 20.

Koop was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia and he also served as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He pioneered surgery on newborns and successfully separated three sets of conjoined twins. He won national acclaim by reconstructing the chest of a baby born with the heart outside the body.

Although raised as a Baptist, he was drawn to a Presbyterian church near the hospital, where he developed an abiding faith. He began praying at the bedside of his young patients ? ignoring the snickers of some of his colleagues.

"It used to be said in World War II that there were no atheists in foxholes," he wrote in 1973. "I have found there are very few atheists among the parents of dying children.

"This is a time when religious faith can see a family through trying circumstances."

SEO is the best way to establish your business online. The higher your search rankings, the more traffic you will receive. Here are some tips to get started, and to improve your site?s ranking.

Blogging is a great way to add more keyword rich content to your site, and improve your search engine ranking. You will see an increase in traffic to your site.

Using free local listings to promote your business, as it is a great way to get your name out there. Free listings at these sites will generate more traffic and recognition for your site. The value of free advertising should never be overlooked.

TIP! It is extremely important to keep your content fresh and update it consistently. People won?t want to visit your website if you simply present the same old information indefinitely.

If you decide to hire a company to do your site?s search engine optimization, conduct plenty of research before hiring a solid SEO company. There are plenty of internet marketing ?experts? and SEO ?gurus? around who will happily charge huge fees for sub-par work. Look into past clients of these potential partners, read up on testimonials and vet their knowledge against what others say online. You will be thankful you did.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. Podcasting is a great audio or video medium to provide your customers with relevant and topical information. This format has become increasingly popular in modern times. Just be sure to properly tag your podcasts, so that they also get a good ranking in related searches.

Providing a site map is an important way to help search engines spider your website and increase your incoming traffic. This results in the pages being linked together. An easy to use site will get more traffic.

TIP! Include transcripts of any streaming media like audio or video on your site in order to help the search engines rank your content. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Create original content frequently, and publish it to your site. Set a goal for yourself, whether it be one story a week or one per day. Search engines take frequency of updating into account when they determine site rankings. Sites with a regular stream of new content garner higher page rankings.

It is important that links in your website and incoming links all include keyword phrases. ? as anchor text. Avoiding this will help ensure search engines see your links as relevant to your keywords, and then they will rank your site higher. Go through your website periodically to ensure that internal links are keyword links also.

Sharing a proxy with a site that is flagged or banned is not a good idea. If you unknowingly share a proxy with spammers and/or banned sites, it will have a negative impact on your search engine ratings, and you may have trouble getting good traffic.

TIP! Web analytics is a fantastic tool for tracking the impact that changes are having on your site and it should be in place before beginning any SEO. You should buy an analytics software and utilize it so you can tell what tactics work and what tactics are not working.

Site maps help search engines catalog your pages more effectively. A site map can help a search engine find pages on your site more easily. Site maps improve search engine results, regardless of the size of your website.

In order to generate more hits from search engines, try using longer or plural form of your keywords. Keyword stemming is a strategy that some search engines use. If you choose a keyword that has other possible endings, such as ?accountant,? the search engines might not include your site in results for the terms ?accounting? or ?accountants?. Use keyword stemming as an advantage over your competition. Use longer forms of your keyword as well as the main keyword.

TIP! Every page in your website needs to be easy to read. Adding interactive functions to your website, like allowing users to change the font to their preferred size, can help to build your online reputation.

Search engine spiders do not understand URLs in the same way people do. You want to remember this when you create your URLs. References to page numbers and sessions will only confuse the spider. Search engines spiders have a difficult time navigating dynamic URLs, and as a result, may not index your site correctly. The best way to avoid this problem is by converting dynamic web addresses to static URLs that include your main keyword instead.

Adding a site map to you site is vital to any SEO process. It makes it much easier for the search engine?s spiders to crawl through your website?s information. A huge site might require more than a single map. A good rule of thumb is to not have lots of links on each site map.

While these tips on SEO are useful now, remember that the algorithms for search engines are always changing. It is therefore important to stay up-to-date on the newest developments in search engine optimization. You have to keep applying new techniques to maintain your rank.

TIP! Search engine optimization, or SEO, can be viewed as a specialized type of marketing strategy. With search engine optimization, you tweak the content of your site to meet the desired criteria of popular search engines like Google or Yahoo.

TokBox?s WebRTC-Based Video Chat Platform Now Supports Firefox Nightly And Aurora

tokbox_firefox_logoTokBox, the live video chat platform that was acquired by Spain’s Telef?nica in 2012, was one of the first companies to fully bet on WebRTC (the Web Real-Time Communication API), the quickly developing standard for plugin-free in-browser video, audio and text chat. After launching its Chrome integration earlier this year, TokBox today launched its support for Mozilla’s Firefox – starting with the bleeding edge Aurora and Nightly editions of the popular browser. Now that TokBox supports Firefox, developers using its WebRTC-based?OpenTok platform can write video-enabled apps that allow for chats between users on iOS, Chrome and Firefox. With WebRTC now being part of Firefox’s early release?versions, users can expect to see it in the stable version of Firefox somewhere around version 21 or 22 (the stable channel is currently on version 19). As TokBox CEO Ian Small told me last week, his company started working with Mozilla sometime around last November. His team got early access to Mozilla’s WebRTC implementations and worked closely with the team there as Mozilla stabilized its own implementations of the standard. TokBox’s OpenTok platform ensures that developers don’t have to worry about the different WebRTC implementations on different browsers and the platform will also provides numerous additional services that a native WebRTC app doesn’t have provide, including, for example, broadcasting to a large group of viewers and video recording. OpenTok, the company says, is currently being used by more than 70,000 organizations, including the likes of Major League Baseball, Ford, Bridgestone and the remote presence startup Double Robotics. “Between Firefox 21 and Chrome 25,” Small told me, “we now have what appears to be a reasonably stable interop situation.” WebRTC, he argued is still “in its infancy.” The native version in the browser can be used to connect two people, but the standard doesn’t offer features like letting developers connect more than two people at a time or even record sessions. Based on TokBox’s experience with WebRTC, Small also believes that the spec should accommodate alternative video codecs besides the Google-backed VP8 format. In addition, he argues that bandwidth allocation, which would allow apps to devote more bandwidth to the speaker, for example, should be part of the standard. Despite these issues, however, Small believes that WebRTC will see “serious pickup” in the second half of this year, especially now that most of the key mobile and desktop platforms support it.

The Monkey Kit holds your tablet where you need it

Monkey Kit.

If you've ever wished you had a third hand to hold your Android tablet, Octa's Monkey Kit is something you'll be interested in. Just like that ever so useful appendage hanging from the south end of a Monkey, this tail is flexible yet rigid, holds to almost any shape, and it's suction device grips your tablet even tighter than you do. It's built like a tank from quality materials, looks and feels great, and is super-easy to use.

We've had it here at chez Jerry for about a week, and have found it indispensable for both work and play. It's incredibly handy holding the Nexus 7 with a recipe app open while making a mess  cooking in the kitchen, my wife uses it to display a spreadsheet while she works -- freeing up her second monitor for Facebook, and when the lights go out and I find I can't sleep, a bit of Netflix in bed while the Monkey Kit does it's hands-free magic is the ticket.

It's all done through what Octa calls the Vacuum Dock. Place it on a smooth spot on the back of your tablet and pump it a few times to create a seal -- a really, really tight seal. Using a special cam design, the "tail" locks in place into the Vacuum Dock, making for a three foot long third arm to position your tablet wherever it is you want or need it positioned. It works on almost any tablet -- as long as you have a smooth surface to "stick" it to, you're golden. Having said that, be warned that it doesn't work with the Nexus 10, and for some insane reason known only to Google, it doesn't seal on the white-backed Google I/O edition Nexus 7. The retail Nexus 7, as well as any of the Kindle Fires, Galaxy Tabs, Transformers, or Xooms hold just fine though.

You're probably asking where do I find out more about this Monkey Kit thingy? That's easy. Visit Octa's Mokney Tail product page, where you can find out everything you need to know and pre order your own Monkey Kit for $99. Hit the break and see a picture gallery of the construction and parts.

ASUS FonePad official: 7-inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 (hands-on)

ASUS FonePad official 7inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 for 16GB handson

We already knew ASUS was prepping a product called the FonePad, a 7-inch tablet with built-in phone functionality (yes, just like the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0). Well, ASUS just formally unveiled it here at Mobile World Congress, which means we've got a few more details to share than we did previously. First off, the speculation about its specs was all true: this does indeed have an Intel processor -- a 1.2GHz Atom Z2420, to be exact -- along with 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and an HSPA+ radio. What's more, the 4,270mAH battery is said to get up to nine hours of runtime, which would put this in the same league as other Atom tablets we've tested recently.

In terms of hardware features, the FonePad has a smooth metal back (available in gray and gold), making it drastically different in appearance from the similarly sized Nexus 7. 'Round back you'll find a panel where all the usual antennae are, and hidden underneath are both the micro-SIM slot and the microSD reader. That microSD slot, by the way, supports 32GB cards, which should come in handy considering this has just 16GB of built-in storage. Additionally, the tablet has a 3-megapixel rear shooter and a 1.2-megapixel front camera, attached to a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 IPS display.

The FonePad will be available in Europe for £179 / €219. Here at MWC, ASUS also confirmed a US dollar price of $249, though we had heard rumblings it wouldn't actually be sold there. In any case, the on-sale date will be confirmed at some later time. We're hoping to test one ourselves soon enough, but until then, stay tuned for the usual round of hands-on shots.

Update: Our hands-on photos and video are in! Enjoy!

Should Big Oil Receive Taxpayer Subsidies?

Amid conversations about budget cuts and safety nets, my curiosity was piqued as to why some of the wealthiest oil companies in the world were being given a helping hand by the American people.? Or more simply put, "Why are these companies being subsidized by the federal government?"

In addition to receiving funding, they are also the beneficiaries of exemptions from enacted environmental standards. This means they are not bearing responsibility for the consequences of health burdens resulting from their actions.

Jessica Ennis, a Legislative Representative at EarthJustice, explained to me, "In order to transition to renewable energies, it is essential to level the playing field." While oil and gas companies are receiving subsidies and are not being held to the same standards of accountability, that won't happen.

The Federal Policy Director of Oceana, Corry Westbrook, ran some numbers by me. She said, "The oil and tax subsidies that go to the top oil producers such as ExxonMobil, Shell, and Chevron are $4 billion plus per year--roughly $43.6 billion over ten years." In a observation of understatement, Westbrook added, "That's a lot of money."

Many of these tax breaks have been in the tax code for one hundred years. As time passed, they became more elaborate and entrenched. The government does provide subsidies for alternative energies, but because they are relatively new--the protocol demands that requests be submitted annually.

Westbrook indicated that beginning in 1980, during Ronald Reagan's administration, alternative energy began receiving federal subsidies. However, since they are not an "integrated" or "embedded" part of the tax code, alternatives must continually request extensions.

ExxonMobil ranked globally as the number-one money-making company in 2012. Their revenue was $486.4 billion. Shell comes in at number two ($470 billion), BP is number four ($386.4 billion), and Chevron squeezes into the top ten at number seven ($253.7 billion).

Do taxpayers realize that their dollars are going into the pockets of these companies?

Discussing the connection between powerful and monied donors and politicians, Westbrook illustrated the premise with the example of Presidential candidate Mitt Romney--who received $5.3 million from the gas and oil industries.

The Executive Director of Oil Change International, Stephen Kretzman, referenced the beginning of the 20th Century as both the birth of the car and the oil industry. When it was a young business, oil needed help getting off the ground. However, the subsidies that were easy to enact have since become hard to take away. Echoing Westbrook, Kretzman pointed to the symbiotic relationship between elected officials, lobbies, and donors. At the Dirty Energy Money website, citizens can check which companies are pumping funds to elected representatives.

"We know that we have to stop using fossil fuels," Kretzmann told me. "We have to leave two-thirds of all existing fossil fuels in the ground." He continued, "The first thing we have to do is to stop subsidies, stop wasting taxpayers' money, and put it toward alternatives. The latest climate science shows that this is the way to avoid the worst impact of climate change."

The question remains as to why our dollars are going to companies that are reaping billions in profits, contributing to health issues, as well as adding to what Kretzmann qualifies as "climate chaos."

Efforts to address this issue have been undertaken, but with no results. S.2204 - Repeal Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act was introduced on? March 19, 2012, by Sen. Robert Menéndez (D-NJ). Despite nineteen co-sponsors, it didn't get very far. OpenCongress.org has a robust detailing of organizations that supported or opposed the bill, along with a money trail. ExxonMobil is listed there as one of the "specific organizations" opposed to the initiative. The New York Times called out the oil and gas companies for fighting the bill in their editorial "Big Oil's Bogus Campaign."

Approximately two months later, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) held a press conference to announce their legislation to end "billions of dollars in oil, coal and gas subsidies." My favorite point was:

"Deny deduction for oil-spill costs: BP was able to deduct from its tax liability billions of dollars for certain costs related to remediation from the Gulf oil spill. This provision would ensure that corporations responsible for oil spill clean-up and damages do not get a tax break for paying to clean-up their mess."?

So where do things stand now?

Abridge Too Far: The Justice Theater Project Murders - Triangle Arts ...

The Justice Theatre Project will present a community-theater production of "Julius Caesar" on Feb. 15-17 and 22-24 in Clare Hall at the Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi in Raleigh

The Justice Theatre Project will present a community-theater production of ?Julius Caesar? on Feb. 15-17 and 22-24 in Clare Hall at the Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi in Raleigh

William Shakespeare?s plays may be Public Domain, and therefore FREE to produce ? and ruthlessly abridge ? without paying royalties; but they are deceptively difficult to stage successfully. Not many community theaters in the Triangle or elsewhere have the capability to pull it off or a talent pool deep enough to communicate the power and poetry in the dialogue of the Immortal Bard?s timeless tragedies. Sadly, such is the case with The Justice Theater Project?s current ill-conceived and at times horribly miscast presentation of The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, which was penned in approximately 1599 in England, at a time when the end of the 40-year reign of Queen Elizabeth I was imminent and her failure to appoint a successor raised the very real threat of Civil War.

Shakespeare was not unaware of the havoc that puffed-up military commanders could wreak when they decided to seize power from civilian authorities. The assassins of Roman general and politician Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) claimed that he had ambition to burn and was about to make himself king and do away with the cherished Roman Republic (509-27 BC), which was run by the Senate.

But in the abridgement employed in the current JTP modern-dress production of Julius Caesar, under the direction of David Henderson, Caesar is played by the genial and grandfatherly and terribly miscast John Honeycutt, a fine actor and a sweet man who portrays the title character like a typical glad-handing politico ? think former President Ronald Reagan at his most avuncular ? without demonstrating that Caesar has the fire in his belly to depose the Senate and install himself as sole ruler of the Rome and its burgeoning empire. Indeed, it is impossible to the average viewer to see how Honeycutt?s Caesar has got his assassins? panties in a wad.

Moreover, at the end of Act I, when the Ides of March 44 BC has come, and these self-appointed ?patriots? carve up Caesar ? in an unnecessarily graphic manner, with blood bags spurting and splashing the stage with crimson ? JTP transforms Julius Caesar from a Grade A drama of political intrigue into a Grade Z slasher film. Act II commences with the famous funeral oration of Marc Antony (delivered with passion by Jade Arnold), but soon disintegrates into a series of chaotic and ultimately unintelligible battle scenes ? mostly viewed from the behind-the-lines headquarters of Cassius (the miscast Jeremy Fiebig, who may have had that ?lean and hungry look? about 40 to 50 lbs. ago, but now more resembles yours truly than Cassius) and Marcus Brutus (an ineffectual Brian Fisher, who never says or does anything in this JTP production to justify Marc Antony?s surprising end-of-play characterization of Brutus as ?the noblest Roman of them all?).

Director David Henderson?s misguided decision to transform Caesar?s barren third wife Calpurnia into a smoking-hot babe flashing smoldering come-hither looks at the general?s associates is another misstep, although Katie Anderson sizzles in that role. Funnyman Mike Raab is wasted as Casca, but George Kaiser and Michelle Johnson make nice impressions as Caesar?s ultimate successor Octavius and Brutus? fearful wife Portia.

The saddest thing about the current Justice Theater Project presentation of Julius Caesar is that newbies to the works of celebrated Elizabethan poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616) will wonder what all the fuss is about. I hope that in the words of the Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate, JTP brushes up their Shakespeare before tackling one of the Bard?s plays in a future season.

Significant temp rise after new ssd /windows re-install

I changed paste on cpu die and heatsink, seems to have done the trick, perhaps at some point the paste on die got dry, with my less than stellar cpu cooler i can't leave it on it's own for too long and don't do overnight cpu stressing.
All the same with less room in the case now that'll add to temps, also the new ssd is a lot faster than the other one and even writes twice as fast so i'm hoping it's just the cpu getting busy with the new hardware.
But yeah temps are pretty much back to normal it seems, within 5C or so. i tried just a heatsink job first but when i done a cinebench i seen one core was around 15C less than the others and that's what made me re-paste the die also.
With 3 SSds and 2 disc drives now i can see how you fellas go for the more sizeable cases.

Yep, seems fine again.
Edit: it's been benched and it's back to normal yay! (heatsink must have been displaced sometime between yesterday and today).

old garrett

Long before I was a meteorologist, I was a college student. A student that couldn?t organize thoughts, talk in public, write, or ?communicate? thoughts effectively. Speaking in public is more feared than death. For me it meant dry mouth, shaking, rapid speech, constant sweating, and a general lack of confidence in front of people. I used to sweat so much I would roll my sleeves up because I felt so uncomfortable talking; it?s a running joke now when we have tornado warnings because I still can?t stand to wear suit jackets and long-sleeves during intense public speaking.

If you look at my college transcript, you?ll find: Intro to Mass Communications, Intro to Speech, Fundamentals of Public Speaking, & Broadcast Writing. There are also two Journalism Internship courses. I can truly say that I wouldn?t be doing what I do now without the teachers who invested in my life.

My first class in college was taught by Lori Norin, it was Intro to Mass Communications. I was terrible at talking but wanted to pursue a career in broadcasting. That?s a conundrum for a doofus like me.

In that class, I learned the basics of writing and communicating. I learned body language, speech crafting, gesturing, internalizing speeches etc. I also was assigned to do a class project and create an advertising commercial. We made a video commercial for a product called ?Fresh Fizz? which featured a cat being put into a microwave and then magically turned into the ?Purrfect Drink?. Don?t worry, no cats were actually microwaved, it was all fast edits & shock value to make the 30 second spot more memorable. I?m sure 5NEWS is glad they never hired me for commercial production after reading this. But, I did make an A in Mass Comm.

As I reflect back on that first class, I can think of 3 other classmates who went on to have outstanding careers in communications. A sportscaster, an accomplished photographer, a production assistant for Spielberg. And then there?s me, a meteorologist for KFSM.

The next semester, I took Speech. I wasn?t much better but I?d been spending extra time in Mrs. Norin?s office learning to communicate clearer by watching video tapes of myself and capitalizing on my strengths and growing with my weaknesses. Mrs. Norin was always the person who gave me gentle negative feedback so I could understand where I needed to improve. I was in her office all the time like a sponge trying to learn how to talk so I could one day try to get a job a television.

I was in her office so much, the college hired me to be a part-time Journalism student assistant. I mostly graded papers, but I also learned more about the art of communication, newspaper writing, & broadcast news. Mrs. Norin suggested I do an internship at KFSM, I didn?t think I was qualified and talking to any television personality was incredibly intimidating. She arranged a meeting for me with Bur Edson; Bur gave me tour and accepted me as an intern. He also taught me how to tie a tie, but that?s another story.

Mrs. Norin watched my practice tapes to offer suggestions. I was slowly growing and maturing as a communicator. Another instructor at Westark College, Tom Walton, taught me the art of: storytelling, ?slooooowing? down (as he put it), and something I still use today: ?The One-Word Weather Forecast?.

Simply put, I wouldn?t be at KFSM without either Mr. Tom Walton or Mrs. Lori Norin; and I certainly wouldn?t be able to communicate effectively. Every time I ran into Mrs. Norin I thanked her for enabling me to be where I am today. The last time I saw her was at Sweetbay Coffee Shop in Fort Smith about 2 years ago. We talked briefly about television, and about my Dad who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

Mrs. Norin died last week after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer at the young age of just 56. Looking back, I wish I would have thanked her more for her investment in my life. I?m sure there are teachers in your life that made the same impact in your career; never pass up the chance to tell them how grateful you are for the investment they made in you.

Behind every successful person, there is an incredible teacher.

Mrs. Norin won?t be at UA-Fort Smith next semester, but you can bet her legacy will live on in the lives of the thousands of students who she helped thrive in life & in their career; and for me, she?ll live on every time I deliver a weather broadcast.

Canada's aboriginal affairs minister quits over inappropriate lobbying

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan resigned unexpectedly on Friday after admitting he had inappropriately interceded with tax authorities on behalf of a constituent.

Duncan leaves a month after thousands of unhappy natives mounted protests across Canada about poor living conditions.

Duncan is the first minister to resign on a point of accountability since the federal Conservatives came to power in early 2006 vowing to clean up government.

He said he had written a character reference letter to the Tax Court of Canada in June on behalf of a constituent who was dealing with the Canada Revenue Agency.

"While the letter was written with honorable intentions, I realize that it was not appropriate for me, as a Minister of the Crown, to write to the Tax Court. I have therefore offered my resignation," Duncan said in a statement.

Heritage Minister James Moore will take over Duncan's duties until a new minister can be named. Duncan, who had heart valve replacement surgery in December 2010, will continue to serve as a legislator representing a constituency in British Columbia.

Last month Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty apologized for breaking ethics rules when he lobbied on behalf of a constituent who wanted to set up a radio station.

Triple-negative breast cancer subtypes identified using microRNA

Feb. 7, 2013 ? A new, large-scale study of triple-negative breast cancer shows that small molecules called microRNA can be used to define four subtypes of this aggressive malignancy.

The findings, by researchers at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center -- Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC -- James) working with collaborators in Italy, could lead to new screening methods, prognostic markers and perhaps new targeted treatments for this aggressive and often-fatal form of breast cancer.

The study is published in the journal PLoS ONE.

"The treatment of women with triple-negative breast cancer is challenging because this malignancy can be very different genetically from one patient to another," says co-senior investigator Dr. Charles Shapiro, director of Breast Medical Oncology and professor of internal medicine at the OSUCCC -- James.

"We believe these microRNA signatures define novel sub-sets of triple-negative breast cancer and offer new insights into the biology of the disease and better ways to treat these patients," Shapiro says.

The microRNAs that compose the signatures are involved in regulating cell growth, proliferation and survival, and in cell movement and migration.

"These findings strongly suggest that microRNAs play an important role in triple-negative breast cancer and might be used to better identify the most effective treatment for a patient's tumor," says co-senior investigator and researcher Dr. Kay Huebner, professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics at Ohio State.

"Several of the deregulated microRNAs we found in the cancer samples are involved in chemo-resistance or radio-resistance. MicroRNA profiles can help us to improve and personalize therapies for individual patients," she says.

Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for about 15 percent of all breast cancers. It is characterized by cancer cells that lack estrogen, progesterone and HER2 receptors. For this reason, these tumors do not respond to hormone therapies or HER2-targeted treatments.

MicroRNAs help regulate the kind and amount of proteins that cells make. They do this by binding with messenger RNA (mRNA), molecular copies of genes that are translated into proteins. When microRNA is bound to an mRNA, the messenger molecule cannot be translated into a protein. Instead, it is either temporarily stored or destroyed.

This study investigated associations between microRNA expression levels, mRNA expression levels and overall survival and distant-disease-free survival in women with triple-negative breast cancer.

Shapiro, Huebner and their colleagues evaluated 59 normal, 165 tumor and 54 metastatic matched tissue samples, obtained through The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC -- James.

The researchers ran a complete microRNA profile and a cancer-focused panel of genes for each sample. They then generated microRNA signatures represented by certain prognostic microRNAs that, when deregulated, indicate odds of survival.

"This was a large cohort of triple-negative breast cancer cases and a major analysis effort that we believe makes this work extremely valuable," Huebner says.

To stratify the cancers, the researchers determined microRNA and mRNA expression profiles in tumor, adjacent-normal tissue and lymph-node metastatic tissue from 173 women with the triple-negative breast cancer.

"We identified microRNAs and mRNAs that uniquely represent primary and metastatic tumors, and that are specifically deregulated in that stage of the disease, says co-author Dr. Pierluigi Gasparini, a postdoctoral researcher in Huebner's laboratory.

The results define microRNA expression signatures that characterize and contribute to the differences between primary and metastatic tumors.

"We now want to learn which of these deregulated microRNAs might represent early biomarkers for cancer or metastasis detection," Gasparini says.

The study's key technical findings include:

  • The microRNA signatures correlated with prognosis and were correlated with changes in mRNA expression;
  • Two microRNA signatures were predictive of overall survival and distant disease-free survival, respectively, in patients 50 years of age or younger;
  • mRNA expression profiling resulted in clustering of triple-negative breast cancer into four molecular subclasses with different expression signatures.

"We believe these findings will be a reference point not only for our lab but also for many other research teams that might not have access to large patient populations, and hope that they will accelerate even more research on triple-negative breast cancer," Huebner says.

Funding from the NIH/National Cancer Institute (grant CA154200, CA120516, CA152758) and the Stefanie Spielman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research supported this research.

Fitness Friday || Short-Term Goals | Fitness, Health and Happiness

Fitness Friday http://jillconyers.com

I recently heard a conversation about focusing so much on goals and the end result is missing out on the joy of the journey.

Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.?Greg Anderson?

I say I can do both. And I do. I digress.

Where am I going with this? Last month I joined Abby at Back At Square Zero, and some of my other favorite running bloggers, ?for the #goalgetter2013 Instagram challenge. The general idea is on the last day of every month post an Instagram picture(s) reflecting your goal(s). The challenge has me rethinking my typical approach to goals of having 6 or so long-term goals. For a few months I?m going to try consciously incorporating short-term monthly goals within [not in addition to] my yearly goals.

Short Term Goals

January || Health and Fitness Goals

  • run 2 trail races ? I ended up running 1

January goals

  • 3-4 days/week strength training depending on mileage ? SUCCESS

February || Health and Fitness Goals?

  1. natural running form drills?3 days/week
  2. run 4 days/week
  3. strength train 3-4 days/week depending on mileage
  4. run 2 trail races

You can follow my #goalgetter2013 journey here >?JillConyersOnInstagram?or even better follow me and join the challenge!

Are you a short-term goal person or long-term? Maybe both? What are your goals for February??
