PA Wine & Spirits Stores Closed Until Wednesday - Pine-Richland ...

If you were looking for a drink to drown the memory of Hurricane Sandy, don't go to a state Wine & Spirits store today (Tuesday) to get it.

Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board officials announced this morning that the commonwealth's more than 600 wine and spirits stores will remain closed through today.

Stores will reopen Wednesday morning.

All state stores closed by 3 p.m. Monday as Hurricane Sandy approached.

Is your business ready to franchise? | The MegaDox MegaBlog

For many business owners, franchising can appear to be an ideal form of business expansion. Franchisees are responsible for the entire investment in opening locations and due to that investment, are highly-motivated to perform well. That allows franchisors to grow and experience brand awareness a lot faster than they otherwise might.

But not all businesses are cut out to franchise. ?If you?re considering franchising, one of the most important questions to ask is simply, ?Am I ready??

Here are six basic questions you need to answer to help you decide if your business has what it takes.

1. Is it working? In order to franchise a business, the business model must first be proven. You will need to show you have got a successful operating prototype. ?There?s no law requiring that a franchisor demonstrate competence, but there are a certain number of practical considerations.

2. Can you sell it? In order to be franchisable, the business model needs to be attractive to potential franchisees. While it is difficult to quantify ?salability,? factors such as credibility, uniqueness, and brand ?sizzle? all contribute.

3. Can you clone it? The key to success in franchising is making sure that your system is easy to replicate. If the concept only works because of a unique location, a superstar salesperson, or because an owner is working 80-hour weeks, it is going to be difficult to repeat the magic. Ideally, a franchise concept should be relatively simple to operate and should be able to work in a variety of markets. Of course, potential franchisees can certainly bring some special skills or qualifications to the table, but that shouldn?t necessarily be counted on.

4. Can you provide the franchisee with an adequate return? A franchisee who is an owner-operator will expect to get a return, both for the time that they spend in the business as well as their investment in the franchise.

5. Are you committed to providing value? The franchise business is largely about maintaining relationships. The most successful franchisors are typically those that are the most committed to making sure that their franchisees are successful. Creating state-of-the-art training programs, providing innovative marketing and product development, and ultimately staffing your organization so that you can provide frequent franchisee interaction, is a must.

6. Do you have the capital? While franchising is a low-cost means of expansion, it is not a ?no cost? strategy. A new franchisor will need capital to develop legal documents, manuals, training programs and marketing materials, not to mention a marketing budget for franchise lead generation.

Keep in mind, even the best plans will result in failure if the underlying business is not ready for prime time. If you?re considering franchising, take a step back? and ask yourself, ?Am I ready??

Obama's iPod a bit like his electorate _ varied

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama's iPod could pass for a voter outreach tool.

Obama ran through his musical tastes Monday during an interview on Cincinnati radio station WIZF. The list is eclectic and all-encompassing and reflects the varied coalition of voters he is seeking to attract.

Obama said old school artists include Stevie Wonder, James Brown, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. More recent tracks are from Jay-Z, Eminem, and the Fugees. Jazz artists John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Gil Scott-Heron are also represented. Obama said there probably isn't a group the interviewer plays that isn't on the president's iPod.

No mention of The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, who has been campaigning for Obama.

Or country music. Much of that vote tilts to the other guy.

Oh, Snap! Case-Mate Blends An iPhone Case With A Snap Bracelet

Screen Shot 2012-10-29 at 5.18.02 PMCaseMate, along with every other case maker out there, is launching a new wave of products alongside the iPhone 5, for both the new phone and the iPhone 4/4S. In (what I can only assume is) an attempt to differentiate creatively, CaseMate has blended a normal rubber case with a snap bracelet. You know, the kind from when you were a kid that you won at some sort of school fair for not sinking your English teacher in the dunk tank. Oh, snap. At face value (as in, looking at it from the front), the Snap looks like your typical iPhone case. It seems to be made of silicone and slips on the iPhone. On the back, however, there’s a slab of extra rubber with a button on one side. When you press the button, the rubber snaps out into a multi-directional kickstand. Just check out the video: It’s a cute take on a kickstand case, if nothing more. The case comes in five different color flavors and is available for the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4/4S. Grab it at CaseMate for $35.

Nexus 4 leaked on video, Android 42 gets exposed alongside new LG hardware

There ain't much here we haven't seen before, but look -- it's a video. The thoroughly leaked LG Nexus 4 -- which was likely scheduled to be formally unveiled today if not for Hurricane Sandy -- has shown up in a 107 second video hosted up by Swedroid. We're guessing that select international sites briefed on the handset weren't hearing any of that "delay" stuff, and have instead let loose on the material they had access to. The hardware itself is no surprise, boasting clean lines and a minimalistic motif that looks a hair thicker than we had envisioned before. Android 4.2 looks right at home, though -- as if you haven't seen enough of that in the Nexus 10 leak. Head on past the break and press play, won't you?

Actress, model and former WWE Diva Stacy Keibler, minus Academy Award-winning actor boyfriend George Clooney, hosted Dom Perignon?s Halloween Masquerade at Hyde Bellagio on Saturday night. Before heading to the hotspot behind the Bellagio Fountains, Keibler tweeted, ?Who?s joining me @sbe_nightlife for my #masquerade party tonight?!?!? and a photograph of herself in a black mask.

Keibler, an alumnus of ABC?s ?Dancing With the Stars,? arrived on the red carpet after 11:30 p.m. wearing a black chiffon dress, a black lace and rhinestone mask and a ponytail. She happily signed autographs for fans after posing for photographs on the arrivals carpet outside Hyde. Inside Hyde, Keibler and her friends made their way to a VIP booth beneath the club?s fireplace and DJ booth as Hyde?s masked performance artists greeted them carrying giant letters spelling ?we love Stacy.?

The DJ announced, ?We would like to welcome the woman of the hour, the beautiful and talented Stacy Keibler!? Keibler tweeted in response, ?And I love you too @sbe_nightlife and @HydeBellagio. So much fun!!? along with another photograph. (Who doesn?t love a woman who has mastered social media?!)

Keibler enjoyed Dom Perignon -- naturally -- and danced to throwback songs including Michael Jackson?s ?Thriller? and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell?s ?Ain?t No Mountain High Enough.? The group snapped photographs in their masks and partied into the early hours to the sounds of DJs Konflikt and Jace One.

Also at Hyde: ?The Bachelorette? and ?Bachelor Pad? star Kalon McMahon with a group of friends. Kalon, in a denim jacket, T-shirt and shades, partied in a VIP booth. Thanks to Cassi Thomas of Erik Kabik Photography and Steven Lawton of WireImage for their photo gallery.

SEC taking deeper look at Nasdaq's Facebook plan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Securities regulators are taking a closer look at Nasdaq OMX's $62 million plan to compensate brokers who suffered losses from the exchange operator's botched handling of Facebook's initial public offering.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said it was instituting proceedings to more closely review the plan in light of the "legal and policy issues raised" by other market players.

"The Commission believes that questions are raised as to whether Nasdaq's accommodation proposal... would promote just and equitable principles of trade, protect investors and the public interest, and not be designed to permit unfair discrimination between customers, issuers, brokers, or dealers," the SEC wrote in a notice posted online on Monday.

A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment on the SEC's decision to extend the timeframe for reviewing the proposal. However, on the company's earnings call earlier this month, Nasdaq Chief Executive Bob Greifeld said he anticipated such a move by the SEC.

"To the extent the SEC requires more time, then we would agree to that, so I'm not here to predict what they may do, but end of the year is a reasonable guess," Greifeld said at the time.

Market-makers like Knight Capital Group Inc, UBS AG, Citigroup Inc, and others, say they collectively lost around $500 million on May 18 when Facebook first debuted on public markets. A technology issue delayed the IPO for 30 minutes and in the interim, many orders were not included in the opening cross.

That led to delays in many clients' orders being put through and hours-long waits for confirmations.

Some orders were lost all together, while others were entered repeatedly when market-makers did not receive the electronic confirmations they expected. Those usually arrive within seconds.

Nasdaq has since disclosed that the SEC's enforcement division is investigating the series of events leading up to the $16 billion IPO.

Nasdaq had originally drafted a $40 million compensation plan for brokers who lost money, but later raised it to $62 million amid criticism that the amount was too low.

Since then, some market-makers and brokers have said they would back the amended proposal. But other market participants have continued to balk at the sum being offered.

The SEC's latest announcement that it will "institute proceedings" to determine whether or not to approve or disapprove Nasdaq's proposal is a new, procedural change created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law.

The law aimed to streamline the process for the commission to review rule changes filed by exchanges, which act as self-regulatory organizations.

It requires the SEC to either approve, disapprove or institute such proceedings for proposed rule changes no more than 45 days after an exchange submits it for consideration.

If the SEC does not act within the 45 days, the rule automatically gets approved. In this case, the deadline for the SEC to act was October 30.

Typically the SEC will institute proceedings to more closely review rule changes if they are novel, complicated or somewhat more controversial.

A decision to institute proceedings "does not indicate that the Commission has reached any conclusions," the SEC said in its notice.

The SEC will seek additional public comments to help it reach a final decision on whether to accept Nasdaq's compensation plan proposal.

The agency said among the main complaints it has already received from commenters include concerns about the "limited categories" of claims eligible for compensation, Nasdaq's method for determining losses and a requirement for member firms to waive all claims against the exchange operator for their losses.

Huawei Honor 2 unveiled: 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 4.5-inch 326 PPI display

Huawei Honor 2 unveiled Quadcore 14GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 45inch 326 PPI display

Never one to stop unfurling new smartphones, Huawei's just detailed yet another high-end Android handset. The Honor 2 packs the company's in-house K3V2 1.4GHz quad-core chip, up from the single-core found in the original, alongside 2GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage. Around the back, there's the BSI 8-megapixel camera sensor, capable of burst shots and full 1080p video capture, while Huawei has also included a microSD slot for storage expansion. With a 4.5-inch 1,280 x 720 display, there's hefty pixel bump up from the 245 pixels per inch found on the first Honor -- in fact we have a Retina display-matching 326ppi. The Chinese phone maker is also talking up its claims of 72 hours of standby time, which is something we'd certainly like to try out when review samples eventually appear. Pre-orders will start in China later this week, with the Honor 2 priced up at 1,888 yuan -- just over $300.

Guide To Self Improvement - ProjectPB ? The ProjectPB Blog

The number of people looking to improve themselves is huge, if not limitless. Some people will want to work on their personal issues, where others feel the need to focus on improving their careers. If you have an interest in personal development, this article is a great place to start.

Use your work time efficiently. The simple trick is to take more breaks when you work. This might seem counterproductive, but having constant breaks will help you recharge and unwind, so that you will get a lot more things done when you go back to working.

You must know what you want out of your life in order to develop personally. Knowing your destination can have an effect on how you view the journey.

If you see that you are frequently not reaching the goals and expectations that you have set for yourself, stop and reassess what the problems might be. Look for resources related to your issues and ask your friends about their struggles. The issues holding you back might include not making enough of an effort, employing a flawed method, or aiming for goals that are too ambitious.

One of the most basic requirements for your effective personal development is to willingly choose to change who you are. When you make the active decision to change, you are able to direct the course of your personal development.

TIP! If you are looking to achieve success in your life, start by studying those who have already attained great success. Then, intertwine some of their habits into your own success plan.

If you?re having trouble dealing with anxiety in public, try going to the movies with a friend. This allows you to be in a social setting without the added pressure of talking to a lot of people. This will help get you used to being in the same vicinity with lots of different people.

In many ways, your attitude is reciprocal. If you wish harm upon others, harm may come to you instead. In this instance, wish only the best for people. Negative feelings will be less burdensome and less depressing if you make it a practice to maintain a positive mood.

A useful personal development tip is that you always cherish the things you believe are most valuable. Value your qualities and skills and learn to love yourself.

TIP! You may find that meeting and talking with a spiritual or secular counselor a rewarding experience. These people have plenty of experience, and are licensed to help with your problems.

Never forget that you are priority number one. Likewise, you cannot stress over making everyone around you happy 24/7; this is impossible no matter how hard you try. Do not focus on your own happiness to the exclusion of others? needs, but definitely make it a priority. Develop your life around things that you value and that make you happy.

Are you having a difficult time meeting someone that you want to share your life with? Don?t ignore online matchmaking services. Forty percent of people find their partner online nowadays. You may find one that is looking for someone like you. Each site will have pros and cons about the services they offer.

Therapy might be beneficial if your problems are severe. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist. Sometimes, the best solution comes about through the simple act of talking with a trained therapist. Books don?t offer the opportunity for discussion that psychiatrists can.

TIP! Remove the disorganization from all aspects of your life. Getting organized is an accomplishment, and continually staying organized boosts your confidence.

Don?t ignore your body?s signals when you are prioritizing your self improvement goals. If your body?s signals tell you that there is some problem, say, that you need to eat or drink something, then you need to address the issue immediately. Once you do this, your body will be better able to aid you for the long term. Treat your body well, and it will treat you well right back.

By being a leader, you can help improve your personal development. Leadership has many different definitions, but the common theme is influence. Examine the events in your life related to leadership. Which events had the most impact on the way you live your life? What changes have occurred thanks to these events? What qualities make you an effective member of the team? Thinking deeply about these issues can bring awareness of the level of your leadership and team member skills.

Becoming more healthy is an important part of developing personally. Exercising and eating nutritious foods are core to a healthy lifestyle, but you also need to be able to stay with your regimen. Being healthy also contributes to all aspects of life because you feel better when you are healthy.

You should seek to be surrounded by like-minded people. Like-minded people will help strengthen your resolve while reinforcing positive attitudes.

If you want to improve yourself, set some goals first. Write it down if you want to achieve a certain goal. The next step is to seek different ways to grow that skill or trait. Do your best to create the best environment for your success by looking for the kind of situations that will help you progress. If you tackle these things head on, you are more likely to be successful.

Good leaders possess strength and power, but are also compassionate. Mention the weaknesses or problems that you see, but be kind when doing so. Do not forget that being a good leader means that you must also know how and when to follow others. A real leader models integrity and upholds the appropriate virtues. These qualities are required in order to lead successfully.

TIP! If you avoid making decisions, then you are denying yourself opportunities. Choose not to live in fear of your decisions even if you do not have all of the information you desire.

A lot of folks have the desire to improve aspects of their existence, but are not sure how to initiate something. This article offers some good starting points, but it?s up to you to use them. If you ever feel your motivation levels start to slack, reread the tips here to help you get going again.

Tumblr back up, after prolonged outage

7 hrs.

Be careful about approaching your friends and colleagues right now. They might be a bit irritable as they were unable to get a dose of GIFs and Ryan Gosling memes on Tumblr for the better part of Friday morning.?

Yes, the popular blogging service was down for several hours.

According to a note on?the official Tumblr Twitter account?? yes, Tumblr is indeed?on Twitter?? there were "slow loading or intermittent errors on certain pages." The service's staff quickly got to work on setting everything right, according to the same tweet, of course.

Despite the assertion that only some pages were?showing errors or loading slowly, we've found that every single Tumblr blog we've tried to access was affected. Based on the panic which flooded?Twitter, many others were experiencing equally severe issues.

A Tumblr spokesperson offered us the following statement when asked about what's went?on with the service:

Tumblr is experiencing network problems following an issue with one of?our uplink providers. Recovery is moving quickly and we will return to?full service shortly.

Service to appears to have been restored shortly after 2 p.m. ET. Tumblr addicts around the world likely?breathed?a collective sigh of relief.

Want more?tech news or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Brain Dumps, Prioritization And Productivity: A Beginners Guide To ...

I?ve been thinking a lot about my plans for the coming months and the start of the new year.

There?s a lot I want to release next year and it?s all wrapped around a strategy that essentially rests on finally getting myself a proper sales funnel of my own products (if you?re new to the Sales Funnel concept, read my introductory series of articles starting here).

This strategy has a lot of layers to it and each layer contains many tasks that need to get done. There?s everything from product creation, to sales pages, email sequences, product delivery, traffic generation, conversion, content creation, and all the bits and pieces that go together for a typical information product business.

The Sales Funnel

I?ve never properly set up a sales funnel, so I?m excited by the potential and motivated to make it happen. I have a lot of untapped leverage within my existing work, so much of this process will be about releasing ?hidden? profits and distributing my content to new places.

No doubt much of what I have described is on your to-do list as well. There?s a never ending list of tasks like this for an information marketer. The unfortunate side effect is feeling overwhelmed, that you are working hard but not getting anywhere.

To make this process more effective, a big part of my strategy is to sequence the tasks in the right order. For example, there?s no point working on traffic building techniques if you?ve got no way to leverage the traffic you bring in.

To help accomplish these tasks, and more importantly, to reduce my stress, eliminate feelings of overwhelm and give me a clear order of tasks to focus on, I am completing a process of brain dumping and prioritization.

The Brain Dump Technique

To put it simply, a brain dump is taking all the things you are thinking about, worrying about and mulling over that you have to do or that takes your attention, and ?dumping? it into a document.

Don't let this happen to youMy preferred tool for brain dumping used to be good old fashioned pen with a big notebook, but lately I?m more of an Evernote devotee because of the cloud based back-up. There is still something satisfying about using pen and paper though, seeing that big list of scribble that just spewed forth from your brain gives you a sense of clearing space.

Entrepreneurs often struggle to sleep because during the evening you mentally review all the things you have to do. To make matters worse, usually while in bed you?re not in work mode, so you don?t go and start to complete a task. Instead you are trapped in your bed, thinking about what you have to do which leads to more things you have to do. It?s stressful because all you do is open loops, never closing them. Obviously it is not conducive to a good nights rest.

Personally I have no issues falling asleep, I tend to only suffer from this problem when I wake up in the early morning before I get my eight hours of necessary shut-eye. That?s when my nervous system is out of whack from being undercooked, which leads to my head reviewing my previous day and what?s coming up in the new day. If I get carried away, my thoughts turn to a complete life-review, which I have to stop myself from doing if I want to get back to sleep.

The brain dump is a great antidote to the sleepless entrepreneur problem, if you let it be.

The key after doing a brain dump, is that you must allow yourself to rely on whatever tool you just used to clear your head. The notes you have taken are not to be pondered until it?s work time, and then only to pick your next task for that day.

If you brain dump and just continue to think about everything, that?s not a proper clearing process. You need to essentially ?forget? about the issue until it?s the right time to focus on it. That?s why you have to trust your notes ? everything is there when you need it so you don?t have to worry about it.

Prioritization Is Next

David Allen's Getting Things Done Productivity BookIf you have followed the advice offered by the popular book ?Getting Things Done? by David Allen, you will be aware of the idea of always having a device to jot down tasks (a notepad and pen, or your mobile phone for example) and then grouping them into projects and prioritizing.

I like the principles and techniques David teaches, but I have to admit I found his full system too much. The task of collecting and prioritizing became a big task in itself. I found it overkill, I can function with something simpler.

My process of prioritization is somewhat free-flowing to match my lifestyle (and personality I suppose too). I stick to timeframes based on what I need to do to keep the status quo running smoothly (blog posts, emails, existing commitments coming up during the week such as interviews) and do these things early to create time to get the moving forward tasks done during the rest of the week.

To decide what part of a new project to work on during my moving forward time, I take into account two variables -

  1. What makes sense to work on now based on a logical order
  2. What I feel like doing in the moment

When I say ?logical order? this is my own internal strategizing process. I use the 80/20 Rule, the Theory of Constraints and my own experiences to decide what needs to get done first.

It?s not really that tricky when you think about, it makes common sense to do certain things before others.

For example, right now I?m working with two contractors to get info products ready for the new year. Hence at the moment I focus all my new project time on the product delivery aspects such as ?

  • Creating product
  • Setting up product delivery technology
  • Payment processing system
  • Sales pages

It makes sense for me to focus on these aspects now, so when I send traffic to my site and people join my newsletter, I have products they can buy and benefit from.

I could spend my time working on video marketing, or optimize and increase the number of podcasts I do, or write more blog content, or focus on my affiliate program, or any number of things. If however I don?t have my sales and conversion process established, most of those activities will just make me more ?busy?, not significantly more profitable.

At the moment I monetize primarily via advertising and affiliate income. Solid revenue sources for sure, but not in my experience as good as having your own product (in terms of financial return, personal gratification and business building).

What?s more important to me now, which I should have focused on years ago, is setting up a funnel that converts and determine my visitor value (how much on average one person joining my funnel is worth to my business). From there I can go to work increasing traffic.

There?s no point filling a boat with people if it?s full of leaks. Fix the leaks first, then sell tickets.

Mood Swings

One area that people rarely talk about when it comes to task prioritization is mood and energy. This is unfortunate because I believe mood management as a technique for energy efficiency is potentially the most important aspect of productivity.

I?m not going to pester you with the basics of body health. You obviously know it is important to eat small regular healthy meals, to get a good nights rest and exercise. These are core practices to set in place to keep your machine ? your body ? running at optimum levels. The rest of the process is all about managing your energy levels, choosing to do the right task to match where your body is at.

For example I?m typing this at a chocolate and coffee shop in the Brisbane CBD with an entire afternoon of available time (I?m drinking tea by the way). I started writing at 2pm, the first business related work I have done today. I have a solid amount of distraction-free time available, I feel motivated to create and I have food in my belly. That?s an optimal situation for me to put in a good couple of hours of writing, which I have.

If it was late at night and I was tired, but not quite ready for bed tired, I?m not about to start writing an article. I need to be fresh for that. Instead this is a time to do smaller tasks, but still tasks that can help move my new projects forward.

For example, I need to assign tasks and give materials to a tech contractor, so she can get my new products ready for download. Do this I just write some short instructions and attach some files into a to-do in Basecamp. When I wake up the next day, chances are the work will already be done.

Perhaps because I?ve had such a flexible work schedule for so long (I?ve been an internet entrepreneur for nearly 13 years), I?ve always been very responsive to my moods (you might say a little too responsive!). Most people have to force themselves to work while tired, or do tasks they hate as part of a job. If I?m tired, I have a nap. If I?m hungry, I eat now, not on some kind of schedule someone else decided upon. I get to pick the tasks I do, so most of the time I do things I like, for example, write this article you are reading now.

It?s important not to fight your energy and moods, but to leverage them. Work with your energy flows, don?t fight them, assuming you have your basics covered with good body health.

If you have an hour spare to listen to some great training on energy management from Tony Schwartz, in a presentation he did for the staff at Google ?

Brain Dump, Prioritize And Work With Your Energy

Do you want a recipe for a productive day? Well you have one now?

I?ve just given you a very powerful, yet simple in concept, three-step formula:

  1. Brain Dump everything on to paper or a digital tool so you don?t have to waste energy thinking about all of it and get a good night sleep
  2. Prioritize your notes into tasks based on a logical order of performance
  3. Work on the tasks, being mindful to align your body, mood and energy levels with the type of effort required to get the job done.

You can also use these techniques for your entire life, it does not have to be about your business. It can be caring for your family, or planning an exercise program, or completing a university degree. Everything can be removed form your head, sorted into tasks, prioritized by what matters most to you and what you can get done given your current energy levels.

At the very least, try the brain dump technique. Getting things out of your head and forgetting about them is a huge stress reliever. I use it every day on a micro level by brain dumping a short list of two-to-five tasks to do that day, if I can. That?s all I think about when it comes to work for that day, the rest I leave for another day, so I don?t think about. If I do think of something, it gets brain dumped, ready to be put on a daily to-do list in the future.

Enjoy your day!

Halloween Costumes 2012: GMO Corn, Paleo Dieter ... - Diet Reviews

Halloween is next week and if you?re like many of us you haven?t gotten your costume yet. Fear not, we?ve got some great ideas for you. The world of fitness and health serves as creative inspiration for some of the most relevant and unique costumes. Check out some of our best ideas for ?healthy? costumes this year. ?We fully expect you to take home the costume prize with these ideas!

Weight Loss Before and After

We?ve all seen the pictures of a former overweight person standing in their old pants, pulling out the gaps in amazement at their former size. If that?s your reality too, flaunt it this year. ?Show the world what you accomplished and have some fun with it. Stick some advertising bursts on your clothes stating your weight loss or even a before picture. You did the hard work, get some extra credit at your party this year. Need some inspiration to achieve your own real-life before and after? Check out our True Weight Loss Stories.

Extreme Marathoner

2012 saw a continual growth in marathoning, and the sport got some political notice as well. Dressing as a marathoner could be really fun when you go over the top with sweatbands, water bottles, a lap watch, and of course the big finishers medal. You could also take a poke at vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan in your marathoner costume. Runners may never forgive him for saying he ran a sub-3 marathon, when in fact is was over 4 hours. Maybe throw on some Romney/Ryan campaign flare in the midst of the running garb and add a bib with Ryan?s name on it. But it seems like having a clock an hour or so off might really be the clincher.

London Olympians

With the Olympic torch still warm, the events and athletes of the 2012 games are great inspiration for costumes. Some fun choices might include a tribute to Michael Phelps; if you can manage a swim suit and all those medals there?s no questioning who you?re supposed to be. Usain Bolt is another unmistakable sight; put on the Jamaican colors, gold medals, and flash that signature pose and you?ll easily be recognized as the fastest human on earth. And who could forget our US women?s gymnastic team? This would make a great group costume ? ladies just pull your hair back tight, add lots of clips, and don?t forget the red, white, and blue warm-ups. If you wanted to have even more fun, practice your Makayla Maroney ?unimpressed? expression and you?ll be the hit of the party.

Paleo Dieter

2012 has had its fair share of diet crazes. One of the hottest can also be a great costume idea. The Paleo Diet is also referred to as the ?caveman diet.? Add on to a traditional caveman or woman costume by including food props. As the diet calls for eating things that can be consumed raw or hunted, maybe ditch the typical club for a fish prop. Even better, a fish with a bite taken out of it. Include raw veggie props as well and you?ll be a fantastic conversation starter as people may not get it right at first. The delayed laugh is sometimes the indicator of a really clever costume.

Yoga Barbie

Our blonde leggy friend made more waves this year when ?Yoga Teacher Barbie? hit the shelves. Those who spoke out against the doll?s newest role felt she wasn?t a realistic portrait of a woman who works out. Um, she?s a toy. Controversy is always a good jumping off point for a great costume. Break out your softest and perhaps pinkest yoga gear, carry around a rolled up yoga mat, get a lovely blonde wig and have a blast.

A Giant Soda

With the news and controversy of the soda ban in New York, this is the year to capitalize on the drama. Many costume shops have large drink costumes. If you added your touch with a large, red ?BANNED? ?stamp across the front, it won?t take long before people start saying, ?I get it!?

GMO

Not everyone will get this at first, but that?s OK. Maybe a little questioning will lead into a useful conversation about what?s happening to our nation?s farmlands and to the food in our markets. Genetically Modified Organism, or GMO, is a majorly hot topic this election year, as a vote to label them is on California?s ballot. Dressing up as a GMO could come in so many forms, but one fun way would be to dress as an ear of corn with an alien mask or a large syringe. The genes of many of our most common foods are being changed through this questionable process. Truthfully, however you portray a GMO, you?ll be the scariest costume on the street!

Zumba Superfan

The Zumba fitness craze continued to spread like wildfire this year. A great costume would be using the Zumba clothes, but going to the next level. Part of the fun of Zumba is the outfits. They are known for the fringe and color, and bell bracelets. Nothing says superfan like too much fringe and color. Get a shirt with the Zumba logo, fringe it from every angle, throw in some over-the-top bright pants, and learn a few moves just to sell the whole ensemble.

N0.16m bra could detect breast cancer

By Sola Ogundipe

A ?smart bra? called First Warning Systems could help women discover if they have breast cancer. Developed by Lifeline Biotechnologies, the bra, based on a novel breast health screening device and method could become available in Europe in 2013 and then in the United States of America in 2014, for US$ 1,000 (N160,000) for a pair.

Preliminary studies with First Warning Systems were conducted in more than 650 women, resulting in an average detection of at least 90 percent. Compared with the standard mammogram, the tests averaged 70 percent accuracy.

In a release, Lifeline Biotechnologies, the medical technology company licensing the bra observed that the First Warning System is capable not only identifying breast tissue abnormalities at their earliest stages, but can also identify the general location of such abnormalities in three dimensions to each of the four quadrants of each breast.

?It is, therefore, not intended as an additional step in the breast cancer screening process, but as an accurate identifier of early breast abnormalities which generate heat via the presence of new blood vessels that nourish the area in question.?

The bra, which would be worn at a physician?s office, has 16 colour-coded sensors that are taped to the patient?s breast. The sensors would then measure temperatures at programmed times over a predetermined testing period. The data is then stored in a recording device worn by the patient. Once the test period is over, the patient then submits the device to their doctor. The sensors are removed; the data is downloaded and then analyzed. Once a report is returned to the
physician, the patient will be called in to discuss any clinical recommendations.

Based on what is described as ?disruptive technology? and tissue health science, the new breast cancer detector could become a major breakthrough in making testing easier for women, however, medical experts say more studies are required before being actively used.

In a statement, Dr. Ted Gansler, Director of Medical Content for the American Cancer Society said: ?Most investigational medicines and medical devices, even those based on sound scientific and technical principles do not end up being adopted into clinical practice. He adds that the main reason is that once these new products are rigorously tested in clinical trials, the result of the study is that they are less effective than current practices.

But Gansler also explains that disregarding mammography would have harmful, serious effects. ?A woman who chooses any breast cancer screening test based on thermography instead of mammography would be making a serious mistake that could have fatal consequences. Major medical and public health organizations all recommend mammography and none recommend thermography or any other tests based on temperature measurements for early detection of breast cancer.?

Dr. Michele Doughty, who has conducted extensive research on how breast cancer affects women of various races differently, thinks the bra could be used as part of an overall test without replacing mammography.

?There needs to be more research and studies on the long term effects of the bra because they must contain some kind of ultraviolet ray component or chemical component,? says Doughty. ?Mammograms and the bra just screen for breast cancer. The only way to actually detect breast cancer is through a biopsy where the specimen is found in the lab.?

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)Few people go through their whole life on the same salary. Things change?you get a new job, get married, divorced, or laid off?and when that happens you need to recalibrate your spending habits. Here's how to do it without throwing your life into turmoil.

We're all prone to developments in a financial situation, and dealing with them?both the positive and the negative changes?is as much about recognizing the change from a psychological standpoint as it is about adapting your budget. To help get changes to your personal finance under control, I spoke with author and financial expert Ramit Sethi of I Will Teach You To Be Rich, and debt-repayment expert Rod Ebrahimi, CEO of ReadyForZero.

How to Adjust When Your Income Increases

Adjusting when you have more money is a nice "problem," but that doesn't mean it's easy. In fact, when people get a huge windfall of cash a common reaction is to overdo it and blow all that money. That's not to say you shouldn't spend more, but you should incorporate it into your life in a structured way.

Step 1: Adjust Your Outlook Without Blowing All Your New Cash

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)So you just got a huge raise, or came into a massive amount of cash. That's great, but don't start spending it yet. Ebrahimi recommends you pause for a moment, and make sure you're solidifying your future before you go off and buy a Jaguar:

Perhaps most importantly: don't adjust your lifestyle expectations upwards just because you now have a higher income. If you do, you'll risk falling victim to the hedonic treadmill and you'll miss out on a wonderful opportunity to solidify your financial security for the future.

That said, you can still be practical and spend your new money. In fact, it's almost a necessity. If you hold back, you might splurge in the future when you're not ready. Sethi explains:

A lot of experts will say, "Take every dollar you're earning now and put it in the bank." That's not practical. The hedonic treadmill is real, if you make more, it's okay to spend more. Make sure you're making your goals, but that's it. If you try to deny yourself as you make more, that's a recipe for blowing up. Take a percentage of what you make, put it into guilt-free spending, and enjoy it.

So, like most things in life, it's about balance. When you get that financial windfall, take the time to think about your financial future, but don't deny yourself the reward for your hard work. Photo by JD Hancock.

Step 2: Create an Emergency Fund

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)With extra cash in hand, it's easy to start plowing through old bills and debts, but one of the fundamentals of financial security is preparation for the future. Because of that, Ebrahimi recommends you create an emergency fund before spending money elsewhere:

First and foremost, you should create an emergency fund to cover at least three months of expenses, but six months is ideal. This means if you go without income for three to six months you can cover your costs. It should not be used except in case of job loss, health problems, car trouble, etc.

Your natural tendency is likely to start paying off bills right away, but Ebrahimi's point is that you can't ever know what your financial future is. When you prepare for the future first, you'll have the peace of mind to cover more expenses in the present. Photo by Tax Credits.

Step 3: Start Paying Off those Large, High Interest Debts Automatically

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)Sethi is a huge proponent of automating your finances so that you're automatically saving money, budgeting, and everything else. His system is incredibly simple, and works on a percentage basis. For instance, let's say you're putting 5% of your income towards paying off a credit card. With your old job, that might have been $100 a month, but when you get a raise, that's a bigger chunk. The nice part is that when you land a new job that makes more money, you simply keep this percentage system, and you're automatically dedicating more money to those debts.

But perhaps you've been putting off paying off a bunch of different loans. In this case, it's best to tackle the high interest loans first. Ebrahimi explains:

Pay off any debt you have, start with the highest interest first. This will ease your monthly finances in the long run (no more interest payments) and give you financial freedom so you won't have to make decisions in the future based on your need to continue paying your creditors.

If you're already automating your finances, you should be dedicating more to those higher interest payments as it is. If you're not, do so, and let the automation do its magic so you'll have more money in the long run. Photo by Ruben Schade.

How to Adjust When Your Income Goes Down

When your income drops?whether you get laid off, you take a job with less pay, or whatever else?it's easy to feel like you're stuck in a rut and you can't do anything about it. To break free from that feeling, you have to stay positive, slightly alter your financial outlook, and make sure you still dedicate money to decreasing debts.

Step 1: Adjust Your Outlook and Keep Your Chin Up

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)When you lose income, it's significantly harder to adjust to the change than it is when you gain income. But that doesn't mean it's not possible. When your income goes down, it's all about not acting rashly, and adjusting your outlook so that it coincides with your new financial situation. This all starts in your head. As Ebrahimi explains:

This process will be hard, and you'll need to adjust your mentality to a new standard of living (at least, temporarily). Staying positive and proactive will help a lot during this transition.

Change your habits in order to bring your spending in line with your new (lower) income. This may require new behaviors like preparing food at home instead of eating out, shopping at thrift stores or discount racks instead of buying the trendiest clothes, etc.

The preparing meals at home part is easy, and regardless of your kitchen skills a ton of meals are simple for everyone. As for shopping at thrift stores, it's all about knowing when and where to do it. If you hit up upscale neighbordhoods you'll find awesome things, and doing so in spring can net you some savings. If you have hangups about the whole process, it's well worth ditching them so you can save money.

As Sethi points out, the other major problem with losing a source of income is the social factor. Friends and family still want you to go out and have fun, even though you can't afford it. Sethi has a very simple solution though:

You have to come up with a phrase that's comfortable. People don't like to say, "I can't afford it," because it almost signifies a weakness on your part. One thing I talk about in my book is to come up with a plan, then blame the plan. So, "I'd love to go out, but my spending plan just doesn't allow it this month." That way, they can't blame you?you're shifting the blame to the plan.

Unfortunately, that's really all you can do to adjust your point of view, but you can also do a few things from a financial position to make the process easier. Photo by Memphis CVB.

Step 2: Streamline Your Budget and Cut Recurring Expenses

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)First things first, it's time to streamline your budget as much as possible. Part of that is tuning your brain to not want those same purchases you used to make, but it's also about getting rid of any recurring expenses you don't need. Ebrahimi has a few suggestions:

The first thing you should do is streamline your budget. Start by identifying expenses that can be reduced or cut out entirely, particularly ones that are large and recur every month. For example, try to get out from under a car lease or auto loan if you have enough cash to buy a cheap used car or start using public transportation.

But don't act rashly if you can afford not to. Instead, ease into the new lifestyle while acknowledging that it's a temporary change. Sethi explains why:

People tend to act in a really short term manner, and they'll cut back on everything. This, of course, totally ignores the psychology of how we behave. We are what's called cognitive misers. We have limited cognition and willpower. So, if you try to cut back on everything?from the 50 cent coffee all the way up to stopping payments on your mortgage?that's going to be a really big problem.

Look at your two biggest discretionary expenses?for young people it's usually eating out and drinking?and take those and say, "how can I cut these down?" For a lot of my readers this is a target of cutting it by 30% over six months. A lot of people would say "cut it all!" But that's like saying you're 200 pounds overweight, and you're only going to eat 800 calories a day. You know it's not going to last.

Part of this process is also about lowering your monthly bills. The good news? Lowering your bills usually doesn't take more than a phone call, and you can lower every single monthly bill with a little effort. Another huge recurring expense you can get rid of is cable television. Sign up for more shows online, or invest in a set top box that suits your needs.

Go through every recurring payment you have and cut where you can. Working in a place with free wi-fi now? Consider cutting your data plan on your phone back, or get a cheaper "dumb" phone and supercharge it with SMS. Look at every bill you have, and cut it wherever you can. You'll likely be surprised at how much you can save in a month. It's a good thing to do no matter where you find yourself on the income scale. Photo by Images Money.

Step 3: Automate Your Bills and Savings

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)Again, automation of your finances is key here. In fact, it's more useful to automate your finances when you're low on cash because it gives you a more accurate view of how much you have left after bills. This is a good thing, because as Sethi points out, none of are going to spend the time redoing our budgets anyway:

Every personal finance books starts with, "let's figure out where you're spending." Then people close the book, and put it back on the shelf. In truth, you can start automating, and then figure out where you're spending is going. It's a myth that you're going to one day sit and open up your bills and figure out where you money is going.

Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't have a grasp on where your money is going. Some personal finance services, like Mint make the process of figuring out where you're spending money incredibly easy.

And just because you're making less doesn't mean you can't still save money. Instead of worrying over the exactness of your budget, Sethi suggests you simply reallocate funds inside your automated system:

If the money goes down, it doesn't mean you take a cleaver and start cutting things out. It means you reallocate things in your system. There's great research in the psychological and personal finance literature that says if you automatically save your money or automatically invest your money, you will not miss it. I'm not saying you should put away $2,000 a month. But if you put away $20 a month you can tune that up to $50 or a $100 over time. The key is to automate the money before you ever see it.

In the end, it's working with what you have, using the exact same system you used when you had a better paying job. The payoff won't be the same, but it can offer the bit you need to stay above water.

Step 4: Reassess Your Bills and Belongings

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)Sometimes, no amount of mental backflipping and budgeting can cover what you need for the month. Thankfully, resellers exist, and Ebrahimi suggests you use them:

If necessary, you may want to sell some of your belongings (on eBay or Craigslist) to generate an emergency fund. You might be surprised how much money you can recoup from selling old books, clothes, jewelry, or appliances that you don't use anymore. If you own a home with an extra room you may want to consider using a service like AirBnB to rent out the room on the weekends.

Step 5: Increase Your Side Hustle

How to Change Your Spending Habits when Your Salary Goes Up (or Down)Finally, it's time to get yourself back on track to making a more money. Both Sethi and Ebrahimi suggest working on your side hustle and finding extra jobs. Why? Because as Sethi suggests, the main thing you need to do is "focus on earning more." It sounds simple, but it's an important mindset when you've lost a large portion of your income.

We've talked before about a few of the places to find quick work online. These include services like grabbing random odd jobs from Mechanical Turk, or taking surveys over at Lightspeed Consumer Panel. You can also make money in your spare time doing all types of random things. If you need a little extra cash and you have some extra time, it's completely possible to earn cash quickly with little effort.

If you have a skill that aligns with freelancing, you can also get started freelancing without quitting your job. Just make sure you have a good idea of what you should charge for your services.

Regardless of what type of financial change you're going through, it's necessary to recognize it as a change?potentially a big one?and act accordingly. No financial situation is permanent, but learning to take control of your finances regardless of whether you're making more or less ensures you'll be better off in the long run.
