Seven things I love about you ? my ideal client ? ee-web design ...

At the moment I am working with a really superb client ? someone who makes the job a pure pleasure. I got to thinking ?Who is my ideal client? ? so here goes 7 Things that make my ideal client

1) Knows why they need a website

compass pointing northD?oh this is so obvious. Yep, except in my experience it?s not. ?Obvious I mean. Cyber space is full of lonely, ill-conceived websites that really serve no purpose. Outdated, unvisited and broken these sites do nothing for the businesses they represent. The perfect client knows that their presence on the internet is crucial to the success of their business. They know that their website is often the first thing a potential client sees. It just has to be good. This knowledge informs everything that follows.

2) Remembers that time is money

My perfect client?s is naturally an expert in their own field. They realise that even though they can write blog posts, clear their cache, and even use Photoshop elements(ohhh!) they are not web professionals. A business start-up friend of mine was advised to use one of the really cheap ?Build a professional looking website in 2 minutes whilst walking the dog and whistling a medley of X-Factor wannabes tunes? solutions. Sure, they will save some money. But how much will they lose in the hours they spend trying to figure out how to make the thing work? How much frustration will they experience waiting to get through to the inaccurately named ?Support desk?? It?s a false economy ? so stick to what you?re good at. Read ?Why you probably need a web professional?.

3) Wants to be involved

crown with contentIf you?re going to fork out for a unique website that?s going to support your business then you need to be serious about that business. That means that you?re going to work with your web designer. You just will have to get involved. From supplying your logo, through to approving designs, and of course the much feared and overly daunting ?Writing of the text?. Your my perfect client, so of course you?ll leave the design and build to me = the professional (please!), but because you?re an interested stakeholder so you?ll have lots of?helpful feedback and ideas.

4) Wants to work with us

two cogsThis is related to the previous point of course. My perfect client here at ee-web design wants to work together on the project, and very often is looking to form an on-going partnership after the launch. Some employ us on a contractual basis, some prefer an adhoc solution. The perfect client is aware that google for example is an on-going , time consuming process, as is developing your online presence. Nobody knows your website like the people who made it.? So when a client disappears and gets someone else to maintain and alter your creation, it can be hard when you are asked to ?Make a few small changes? when your baby has evolved into something else! It?s not that other web developers do it badly (although some do) it?s?just that they do it differently.

5) Has left enough time

Every client I have ever had says the need the site as soon as possible. My absolute ideal client would say something like ?In two months I have a deadline so the site much be launched by ?. ?. ?This is great because they have a clear ending point, that has to be hit.? Along with this they have also planned ahead enough to realise that you?re not going to get a good site in two days flat. Not without paying a jolly substantial premium. I have had clients who seem to hibernate once the design is approved and the build is done. Their new sites are full of ?Lorem Ipsum? place holder content, and can stay like that until the bright sun of spring appears once again ? literally. Its frsutrating for me, and bad for their business. I?d go as far as to say that my perfect clients needs?a deadline -

6) Is prepared to pay for it

The good client realises they need to invest. For sure there are a multitude of low price solutions out there; cheap and cheerful. If that?s what you want to present your business dreams then yep, go for it! To be fair, in some situations these solutions are ideal. But you get what you pay for, and nothing is free (well, not ?Nothing??). Your business is unique, and so your cyber presence has to be too. My perfect client is aware that investing in a really great website is a no-brainer ? since their business is unique their website must portray that uniqueness. It should be a ?Thing of beauty?. If done well, and maintained, your investment will pay for itself over and over.

7) Pays!

piggy bankOnce I sent an email to a client asking if I could invoice. Couple of hours later I got an email back telling me they had paid.? Perfect!

By the time you?read this I?ll probably have changed my mind. In the meantime, I?d love it if you?d shared your thoughts with me and my readers!

  • Perhaps you have great clients? Tell?us why they are great?
  • Have you got any tips on how to turn an average client into a great client??
  • Maybe you are the perfect client ? tell us web workers what we should be looking for?
