Romney and Obama Having Lunch Today: Is ... - Yahoo! Finance

No sour grapes or crow will be served at today's White House lunch when President Obama meets with Mitt Romney for the first time since the election. The president and his former opponent are likely to discuss a topic they both care deeply about: the U.S. economy, including the massive spending cuts and tax hikes that come due Jan. 1 if no compromise is found to avoid the looming fiscal cliff.

"It's not inconceivable that [the president] could say to the Governor today, 'I need your help. I need you to bring the members of your party that you can over to some sort of compromise,'" says Rob Cox, U.S. Editor of Reuters Breakingviews.

Whether Romney will agree to help (and if he still has influence in the Republican party) is not clear. Since the election some leading Republicans including NJ Governor Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have criticized Romney for comments he made crediting the president's win -- specifically the comment that Obama gave "extraordinary financial gifts" to voters.

The president's lunch with Romney fulfills a pledge the president made in his victory speech election. Obama said he would sit down with Governor Romney "to talk about where we can work together to move this country forward."

A week later after the election, President Obama said Romney "presented some ideas during the course of the campaign that I actually agree with." He gave no specifics but suggested they could talk about smart, nonpartisan ideas that could make the government "more customer friendly" and "eliminate additional waste."

President Obama's lunch with Romney is just one of two important meetings today. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate to discuss plans to avoid the fiscal cliff.

Geithner's immediate concern is reaching an agreement to extend the Bush tax cuts for all taxpayers or those with incomes under $250,000, as the president has pushed for. Geithner also supports Warren Buffett's suggestion to raise taxes on Americans making at least $500,00 a year.

Cox says this "fiscal cliff avoidance plan" could be agreed upon before the end of the year.

"You won't have a big cliff problem but it will also still have a deadline," he notes. "If you don't do it by July 4 of next year we go back over this new cliff we've created."

Missing Model Kara Nichols' Picture Surfaces On Escort Website

Colorado police said a recent online escort ad, featuring a photo of Kara Nichols, was not placed by the 19-year-old aspiring model who disappeared nearly seven weeks ago.

"Our investigators became aware of that posting and followed up on that lead. They were able to determine that someone else had used the photos of Kara for their own ads. Kara was not involved in posting the ads or with those folks. Someone simply grabbed those photos online and used them for their own purposes," El Paso County Sheriff's Office Lt. Jeff Kramer told The Huffington Post.

The picture was recently discovered by police on a Las Vegas-based escort website. Other sites ran stories suggesting Nichols could be working as a prostitute.

"Is missing teen Kara Nichols a prostitute in Las Vegas?" asked Gather. While Examiner reported: "Missing Colorado teen Kara Nichols has resurfaced in Las Vegas, apparently, as a prostitute."

Neither, however, turned out to be the case.

"It is not uncommon at all for these escort-type businesses to fish around the internet and find photos of other folks to use for their advertisements," Kramer said.

In regards to Nichols' disappearance, Kramer said police are still following up on leads. "We are continuing to identify a number of people who knew Kara or are friends with her," he said.

Nichols was last seen in Colorado Springs on Oct. 9, the same day as the last call from her cell phone at 11:45 p.m.

Police said Nichols was traveling to Denver for a modeling job with two unidentified women. It is unclear if she arrived and her current whereabouts are a mystery.

Police have interviewed one of the women traveling with Nichols, but have not released her name, an they are still looking for the second woman.

ATHENS Nov 28 (Reuters) - Greece has hired Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley to conduct a voluntary buy back of its debt, a senior finance ministry official told Reuters on Wednesday.

Eurogroup finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed earlier this week to conduct the buy back by mid-December, as part of measures to make Greece's debt sustainable.

Private sector analysts have since raised questions over whether it would attract enough interest from bondholders to deliver the promised savings and how it would be funded.

"We hope that early next week, if possible on Monday, the Public Debt Management Agency (PDMA) will publish the invitation for the buy back," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Deutsche Bank will be the lead manager. Deutsche and Morgan Stanley will act together as deal managers, the official added.

One proposal is to lend Greece around 10 billion euros from the euro zone's rescue fund EFSF, which would allow it to buy around 30 billion euros worth of debt, cutting its outstanding obligations by around 20 billion euros.

Officials have said that the repurchase has a target cost of around 35 cents on the euro.

The Greek official, however, said that Athens has not determined yet at what price it will offer to buy back the debt from private bondholders.

A repurchase at 35 cents on the euro is seen as a golden investment opportunity for hedge funds which have bought Greek bonds at rock-bottom prices.

But this is less certain for Greek banks and pension funds, which hold combined nearly 30 billion euros of Greek debt, about half of the outstanding Greek bonds in the hands of private investors.

Concerns that the buy back would be imposed on Greek banks at a price that would be unfavourable to them led their shares to plunge since Tuesday. "At this moment, we intend the buy back to be voluntary," the official said.

Lenovo IdeaPhone P770 stuffs 29-hour battery and Jelly Bean into a lower-cost smartphone

Motorola may face a new contender to the Droid RAZR MAXX HD's battery capacity crown. Lenovo's quietly introduced IdeaPhone P770 at least theoretically challenges its American counterpart by cramming a 3,500mAh lithium polymer battery into a thicker 11.9mm (0.47-inch) body. That's 200mAh more than Motorola's energy champion, and enough for the company to flaunt a 29-hour talk time. That's not quite as long as Motorola's claimed 32 hours, but Lenovo has done something its American rival seemingly can't -- launch a phone with Jelly Bean. Motorola might rest easier in knowing that the the P770 is an unrepentantly budget-focused behemoth, carrying a 4.5-inch qHD display, a (possibly MediaTek-made) 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of built-in storage, an 8GB microSD card and both 5-megapixel rear as well as VGA front cameras. For the ¥1,699 ($273) Lenovo is asking for an off-contract model in its native China, the P770 could still be the first pick of many local phone owners on long-haul trips. It's just a shame that the lack of 4G (and Lenovo's domestic-first mobile strategy) likely means we won't see a launch in the US.

Five Customer Service Tips to Prepare for Holiday Rush | Business ...

I?m writing this the day after Thanksgiving, also known in the retail world as Black Friday. This is one of the busiest, if not the busiest, shopping day of the year. I observed a number of sales people and customers in the stores at a very busy shopping mall. Here?s what I noticed.

By the way, even if you?re not a retailer, there are still some lessons here. Every business will have busier times than others. It doesn?t have to be because of a holiday rush. It can be after a trade show or seasonal. Now, back to Black Friday.

Customers were divided. Some were enjoying the experience of looking for sale items for themselves or for holiday gifts for friends and loved ones. Others seemed to be anything but casually shopping. They appeared to be on a mission. It was either for a particular item or store, or it was to get the best deals they could get on Black Friday. All of the customers had one thing in common: they were going to encounter busy stores, long lines and overworked sales people.

The sales people were busy ? very busy. In some cases, almost too busy.

Some stores were busier than others, and of course, the check-out lines were longer than usual. This was testing the patience of some of the customers.

As a business, we must be prepared for these busier times. If we work hard to create a customer focused brand, we can?t let the holiday rush, the extended hours and demanding customers erode what we?ve worked for. No, if anything we need to up our game and deliver an even better level of service. First for our existing customers, and second because new customers will find their way into our stores, and if you want them back, then the customer service experience had better be amazing.

So, how can we do it? Here are five simple and common sense strategies. This isn?t really new as much as they are important reminders.

Make sure you are staffed well. Wait times for the customer shouldn?t be too different than other busy times. Sales people must be available. If the customer feels they are waiting too long, or they see a long line, they may get frustrated and leave.

Train the staff for the busy times. Prepare them. Give them some tips on how to deal with more than one customer at a time. Expect it will be busy.

Get employees excited about the prospect of breaking sales numbers, but delivering great service along the way. Talk about what happened the day before and plan to repeat the good and avoid the bad.
Have a contest of some kind. Make the day fun.
Model the right behavior. Treat the employees the way you want your customers treated, and expect everyone else to do the same.

Rhino 'cooked to death' 9 million years ago

About 9.2 million years ago, a teenage two-horned rhinoceros was literally cooked to death when a Mount Vesuvius-like eruption enveloped it in lava reaching more than 750 degrees Fahrenheit (400 degrees Celsius), scientists say.

The perhaps fortunate result: a well-preserved skull of the Rhinocerotid, with a tale to tell.

An analysis of the volcanic rock-preserved skull suggests the animal's grisly death was near instantaneous. "(T)he body was baked under a temperature approximating 400?C, then dismembered within the pyroclastic flow, and the skull separated from body," the researchers wrote online Nov. 21 in the journal PLoS ONE. The flow of volcanic ash carried the detached skull about 19 miles (30 kilometers) north of the eruption site and to the site where it was discovered in Cappadocia in Central Turkey.

"The articulated skull and mandible were found alone, and there were no other rhino bones in the surroundings, except for some rib fragments, potentially of rhino affinities," said study researcher Pierre-Olivier Antoine of the University of Montpellier in France. When alive, the rhino (Ceratotherium neumayri) would have weighed between 3,300 and 4,400 pounds (1,500 and 2,000 kilograms), about the size of a young white rhino, though sporting a shorter head, Antoine said. The animal was 10 to 15 years old, a young adult, when it died in a Pompeii-style eruption.

Antoine has excavated dozens of fossil skulls in the past 19 years, and he said the external surfaces of this one were "quite unusual."

For instance, "the bony surface was rough and corrugated all around the skull and mandible, and the dentine (the internal component of the teeth) was incredibly brittle, and even kind of 'corroded' (in) places," Antoine told LiveScience in an email.

When they looked at the remains under a microscope the researchers found structural changes that suggested the animal had been heated to the high temperatures of volcanic flows.

"There was not a real volcano, but a caldera which spread huge amounts of volcanic ash over Cappacocia, during millions of years, throughout the late Miocene-Pliocene interval," which lasted from about 9.5 million to 3 million years ago, Antoine said.

Examples of similar calderas, albeit much smaller ones, are Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines and Krakatoa, a volcanic island west of Jakarta, Indonesia.

The so-called Cardak caldera is inactive today.

Even so, thick layers of volcanic ash have accumulated over millions of years.
