Texas Tornado take 7-2 win over Corpus Christi on Friday

Here is the press release:

The Texas Tornado scored early and often on Friday, defeating the Corpus Christi IceRays handily by a score of 7-2. CJ Reuschlein had a pair of goals while Louie Rowe, JT Paine, Brandon Hawkins, Justin Greenberg, and Drew Mayer added goals of their own. Hunter Leisner stopped 23 of 25 shots for the win (Texas outshot Corpus Christi 45-25, including 23-7 in the first period), as the Tornado moved to 41 points on the season, still tied for second in the South Division with Amarillo. Topeka is one point ahead of both Texas and Amarillo with 42 points.

Texas got on the board in the first period after Rowe drove to the net and had his shot stopped by IceRays goaltender Hayden Stewart. The rebound popped up in the air and after deflecting off of Jackson Leef, fell to the stick of Reuschlein, who scored his first of two goals on the night. Rowe?s goal came about 2:30 later after he took advantage of a IceRays turnover at the Tornado blue line, skated it in on goal, and scored after Stewart once again stopped his initial shot. Rowe?s goal was his third of the season and gave the Tornado a 2-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Paine sniped a wrist shot bar-down to the blocker side of Stewart to make it a 3-0 game and send Stewart to the bench. He was replaced by Ben Myers.

A power-play goal from Emil Romig made it a 3-1 Tornado lead, but Reuschlein?s second came just more than a minute later to re-extend the Texas lead to three. A couple of minutes later, Scott Conway hit Hawkins with a centering pass to the slot, which was all the space Hawkins needed to put home his league-leading 23rd goal of the season.?

Texas led 5-1, but just 12 seconds following Hawkins?s goal, Charles Baldwin added one of his own to make it a 5-2 game. Just more than a minute following Baldwin?s goal, Greenberg? the reigning South Division Star of the Week? scored his 13th of the year to make it a 6-2 game. Later, in the third period, Mayer got his seventh of the year after a scramble in front led to enough chaos to allow Mayer to score.

Both teams return to the ice to close out their two-game weekend series on Saturday with a 7:05 faceoff from American Bank Center.
